II. Sample Essay Portraying Mị Nương Narrating the Tale of Sơn Tinh, Thuỷ Tinh
My name is Mi Nuong, the daughter of the 18th Hung King. You may know me from the fairy tale 'Son Tinh Thuy Tinh.' On my 18th birthday, when I reached the age of marriage, my father wanted to find me a husband of virtue and talent. To find the perfect match, my father organized a competition to select a son-in-law.
After the announcement of the king's search for a son-in-law, many eligible bachelors from around the country came to seek my hand in marriage. They were all noble and talented princes, but I did not like any of them. Therefore, my father did not agree to any of the proposals.
One day, two young men arrived to compete. They both exuded charisma and talent. The first young man was handsome, tall, and wore a suit made of fur. He had a gentle and graceful demeanor. His name was Son Tinh. Son Tinh asked for my father's permission to showcase his talents. With just a gesture, he could move entire mountains or create islands, a talent that impressed everyone present. My father was pleased. The second young man was Thuy Tinh. He had a rough appearance but was equally talented as Son Tinh. He could summon rain and wind, creating turbulent waves and controlling underwater creatures such as fish and turtles. Although he seemed rough, everyone admired his talent. The two men were equally matched, making it difficult for my father to choose. Seeking my opinion, despite my fondness for Son Tinh, my father decided to let fate decide. He asked the opinion of the court officials and finally decided to use a test of wealth. Within a day, whoever could gather the required items would be able to marry me.
Son Tinh asked what the required items were. My father listed a series of rare and precious items that would be difficult to gather in such a short time: 'one hundred bags of glutinous rice, two hundred layers of square glutinous rice cakes, nine ivory elephants, nine pairs of copper-footed chickens, nine jade-coated horses, each with a pair.' These were all items of great value that I had never seen before. That night, I tossed and turned, unsure of who would arrive first and whom I would have to marry.
