1. Common reactions following the third vaccine dose
According to Dr. Nguyen Huy Luan (Head of Vaccination Unit, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City): Antibodies decline gradually 3-6 months after Covid-19 vaccination. The third dose helps boost protection levels, increasing antibody defenses, especially against the new omicron variant.
'In adults, severe reactions such as adverse effects, allergies commonly occur after the first Covid-19 vaccine dose. Individuals receiving the third dose won't experience such severe reactions but may encounter side effects similar to the first or second dose,' Dr. Luan stated.
Common reactions that may occur after vaccination include pain at the injection site, swelling, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, chills, mild fever. Swollen lymph nodes in the armpit region may recur more frequently after the second dose. If you experience these reactions, don't worry; they are entirely normal symptoms that will disappear within two days. Avoid strenuous activity at the injection site. Do not apply anything to the swollen area. For this condition, use fever-reducing medication when feverish. Reactions after the third dose typically occur within half an hour to one day post-vaccination. In some cases, it may last up to 72 hours.
When receiving the third dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, older adults are less affected compared to those aged 18 to 64. If experiencing chest tightness, difficulty breathing, chest pounding, or symptoms of immune thrombocytopenia such as headaches, abdominal pain, blurred vision, seizures... promptly notify healthcare authorities.
It is advisable to consume protein-rich foods, maintain a balanced diet, get adequate rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid overexertion after vaccination.
On December 17th, the Ministry of Health allowed for a third vaccine dose three months after the last dose of the basic regimen; individuals recovering from Covid-19 can receive the vaccine immediately without waiting for six months as before. Additional doses are recommended for those who have received the basic regimen and have weakened immune systems such as organ transplant recipients, cancer patients, HIV-positive individuals, those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, or those treated within the past six months...; individuals fully vaccinated with Sinopharm or Sputnik V vaccines are also eligible for additional doses.
