My sister is expecting. She adores crab dishes like nothing else in the world, but my brother-in-law refuses to let her eat them, citing concerns about pregnant women consuming crab. This situation has led to some amusing and tearful moments...
Surely there are many seafood enthusiasts who have found themselves in situations like my sister's, craving crab but being denied by their spouses. Recently, our family attended a gathering at 63 Cao Thang Street, where there was a plate of incredibly delicious steamed crab meat that was incredibly tempting. Each crab was vibrant red, plump, and loaded with meat, emitting an irresistible aroma that made my sister restless (^^) Feeling sorry for her, I decided to do some research to find out if pregnant women can eat crab and share the findings with everyone!

Pregnant women should befriend crab meat!
As confirmed by our table server, there are typically 3 types of crab: Mud crab, Blue swimmer crab, and Blue crab. However, Mud crab and Blue swimmer crab are considered superior. Not sure where the misconception about pregnant women avoiding crab came from, but I can confidently say it's not true. Pregnant women can benefit greatly from consuming crab meat, especially Blue swimmer crab, which is rich in nutrients beneficial for both mother and baby, including heart-healthy compounds, brain-boosting nutrients for the fetus, B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, folate, minerals, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids. The truth is, crab meat is richer in protein compared to other seafood, but pregnant women should just be mindful of a few things when indulging!

Both Blue swimmer crab and Mud crab are nutritious, but pregnant women consuming Blue swimmer crab will receive the most nutrients for themselves and their baby
So during that gathering, my sister not only got to enjoy her favorite steamed crab dish to her heart's content but my brother-in-law also generously ordered an additional bowl of crab meat soup for her to cool off!
Important considerations for feeding pregnant women crab meat
Firstly, ensure the crab is thoroughly cooked. When preparing, only use fresh live crab, as harmful bacteria multiply rapidly in dead crabs.
Secondly, when eating, remove the crab's apron first, then tear off the stomach sac. The conical stomach sac in the center of the crab's carapace contains a lot of dirt, so husbands assisting their wives in crab consumption should pay attention not to break it! The crab's liver (hexagonal membrane located in the crab's body), intestines (blackish channel located in the stomach connected to the crab's back), and gills (soft tissue resembling two rows of eyebrows located on the crab's belly) should all be discarded!
Crab meat has cooling properties, so pregnant women should consume it in moderation to avoid stomach discomfort, diarrhea, and particularly remember not to drink tea or eat persimmons during or after consuming crab! Those experiencing cold symptoms, stomach pain, fever, or diarrhea should also wait until they recover before indulging in crab.
Choosing the best crabs
If circumstances allow, husbands should take their wives to dine at reputable restaurants to ensure quality. For instance, our go-to spot is 63 Cao Thang, conveniently located near home and always reliable. The crabs here are large, still alive, and the meat is just sweet. Whether my wife wants peeled crabs or crab claws, this place has it all! If anyone knows of other restaurants with delicious crabs and skilled chefs, please share!

Alternatively, if cooking at home, everyone should pay attention to selecting crabs with grayish shells, large aprons firmly attached to the body, firmness when pressing on the apron, strong and flexible movement of legs, especially sharp spikes on the legs, and intact aprons. Crabs with slightly greenish aprons, soft aprons, and watery flesh are less meaty and less tasty!

Choose crabs with grayish, slightly cloudy shells, large aprons firmly attached to the body, firm to the touch, strong and flexible leg movement, especially sharp spikes on the legs, and intact aprons!
63 Cao Thang is my sister's favorite seafood spot, located at 63 Cao Thang Street, Ward 3, District 3. You can check it out for yourself at 63 Cao Thang, where they serve the freshest crabs that meet the highest standards!
