Analysis and evaluation of author Chu Manh Trinh's sentiments towards the Huong Son nature through the poem 'Huong Son landscape'
In the works of medieval poets and writers, nature is no longer a new subject but becomes an endless source of inspiration. We encounter the natural landscape of Con Son in 'The Song of Con Son' by Nguyen Trai or the vivid depiction of love for the homeland and country in 'Thien Truong Van Vong' by Tran Nhan Tong,... Following that inspiration, Chu Manh Trinh, with the soul of a poet and his own emotions, has portrayed the masterpiece natural scenery of Huong Son through the poem 'Huong Son Landscape'.
The poem with 19 lines of varying lengths highlights the characteristics of the oral genre - the genre of folk poetry. The poem not only depicts the beautiful scenery of Huong Son but also expresses the love and pride of the poet for that beauty.
The first four lines are the amazed, delighted emotions, and the joy of the sincere subject when setting foot in 'the first cave' - Huong Son:
'The sky of But scene
Long desired by the Huong Son creature.
Behold the hills, the water, the clouds,
'The first cave' inquires if this is the place?'
From the very first line, the scene unfolds with the ethereal beauty of the 'But scene' and the vast, pure space of the 'sky'. In the moment of delight before this masterpiece of beauty, the poet recognizes that this is indeed the Huong Son he has long 'desired.' The poet has harbored the wish to visit the 'hills, water, clouds' for a long time. And true to those wishes, the natural space here is harmonious to the point of astonishment, with mountains concealed within the sky's clouds. A scene so beautiful, seemingly only found in fairylands, appears right before the sincere subject's eyes. And then, the sincere subject must ask oneself, 'The first cave' inquires if this is the place?'. The gentle question along with the phrase 'the first cave' directly affirms the fairyland-like beauty of Huong Son.
Moving on to the next ten lines, we will gently follow the footsteps of the 'sea traveler' to see the myriad colors and forms of beauty:
'Timid rabbits in the forest worshiping fruits,
Floating quietly, listening to the fish in the Swallow creek.
Echoing in the ears, the sound of the millstone,
The sea traveler is startled in the dream'
Following the rhythm of exploring the scenery here, we temporarily leave behind the fairyland-like beauty upon seeing Huong Son to come to the scene of the lush, refreshing mountain forests, 'mai forests', 'Swallow creek'. By using inversion and figurative language such as 'timid rabbits', 'floating quietly', personification 'listening fish' have made the landscape become lively. The harmony between the natural imagery and symbolic sounds like the 'Buddha's bell', 'the sound of the millstone' at the Buddha's gate has startled the sea traveler. The moment the sound of the millstone echoes serves as a reminder to the traveler that this is not a dream but the real beauty in the mortal world.
And then, the mood and emotions of the sea traveler become even more surprised as they delve deeper, ascend higher:
'Here is the Giải Oan stream, here is the Cua Vong pagoda,'
Here is the Phat Tich cave, here is the Snow Quynh cave.
Who carefully paints the picture, looking up tiredly,
The five-colored stones shimmer like woven silk
Deep within a cave, shadows of the moon envelop,
Twisting through several paths of cloud stairs
As if the mountains and rivers are still waiting here,
Or clever creation of skilled hands arranging.
Confronted with the rich beauty of forms like the 'Giải Oan stream', 'Cua Vong pagoda', 'Phat Tich cave', 'Snow Quynh cave', the sincere subject becomes even more astonished, as if the scenery is created by someone skillful in painting. The word 'here' along with the simile 'multicolored stones shimmer like woven silk' has revealed a myriad of colors and forms of nature. It is a beauty both majestic and poetic. This beauty becomes even more mystical and dazzling through the imagery of twisting paths merging into the ethereal realm of the sky's clouds. Faced with the harmonious landscapes, the sincere subject expresses love and pride for the homeland, saying 'As if the mountains and rivers are still waiting here'. Such magnificent and majestic landscapes require virtuous individuals to use their hearts and virtues to preserve and develop.
The sincere subject continues to express thoughts and feelings about the natural scenery of Huong Son through the final verses:
Reciting 'Namo Amitabha Buddha' beads
The gate of compassion knows countless merits!
The more we gaze upon the landscape, the more we love.
