To listen and summarize the main points presented by others, follow these instructions:
Step 1: Listen to the main points and summarize
Focus on listening to the content and pay attention to the main issues that the speaker will present:
- Pay attention to the introduction and conclusion of the presentation. The speaker will usually introduce the main points of the speech in the introduction or emphasize them in the conclusion.
- Note the repetitive parts in the body of the speech, as the speaker often repeats the main points while presenting, explaining, and providing evidence to clarify them.
- Pay attention to the speaking speed; the speaker will often speak slowly and emphasize the key points, speaking faster for supporting points.
- Pay attention to the keywords of the speech as these are important terms that reflect the main content of the speech.
- Pay attention to non-verbal communication such as images, diagrams, and tables. These means often complement to clarify the main points.
Combine listening and note-taking by:
- Taking concise notes in your own words, which can be in the form of phrases or keywords.
- Using symbols, bullet points to organize and highlight the points.
- Presenting the main points in the form of a diagram.
