The elements of argumentation in the story Faults and Gratitude are evident in:
- The rescued character's response: 'What is written on sand will quickly fade away ...'
- The conclusion: 'So let us all learn to write our sorrows, hatreds on sand, and engrave our gratitude on stone.'
These elements deepen the narrative.
II. Writing a Personal Narrative Utilizing Argumentation
Question 1: Write a paragraph recounting a class activity. In the class activity, you expressed an opinion proving Nam to be a very good friend.
Last Saturday, Lan lost her mp3 player. Lan hastily suspected Nam of stealing it. Lan argued that Nam was sitting nearby and during break time, only Nam was in the class, hence he must have stolen it. I knew Lan suspected Nam only because Nam's family was very poor. During the class activity, Lan even mentioned it to our homeroom teacher, Ms. Hoai. Everyone in the class believed what Lan said had a basis. People were discussing heatedly. Nam tried to explain, but no one listened. I felt frustrated, angry for Nam. I stood up, saying: 'You guys don't listen to Nam, without evidence, don't rush to blame others. Nam is shy, introverted just because you don't open your hearts, always look down on Nam because of his poor, difficult family background, his mother is a laborer, his father is a worker, huh? Does Lan think Nam stole the mp3 player? Don't you remember yesterday morning when you lent it to classmate Huy?' Lan was shocked, embarrassed, bowed her head, said nothing. I continued 'Do you guys know Nam regularly helps street children learn? Housework, studying, and even teaching them how to read, and yet Nam is always a good student every year. Isn't that a role model? Just looking at the outside, the situation and hastily judging others, is it too much? To evaluate someone, you shouldn't just look at the appearance. That's what I and you guys need to learn!' I sat down, silent. The class activity passed heavily, but I knew, the whole class was reflecting.
