Characteristics of Duong Law Poetry Form
I. INTRODUCTION
1. Reason for Topic Selection
Duong Law Poetry emerged during the Tang Dynasty in China and had a strong influence on other literary traditions in the East Asia region during the medieval period (including Japan, Korea, Vietnam). This poetry form flourished right in its birthplace. Evolving over time, Duong Law poetry has become a subject of study for literary scholars worldwide. Understanding the form of Duong Law poetry plays a crucial role in approaching and analyzing the unique content aspects in each work.
2. Research Methodology
The predominant compositions fall into three genres: seven-word eight-line poems, seven-word four-line poems, and five-word four-line poems. Specifically:
- Examples of seven-word eight-line poems include: 'You came to visit my home' (by Nguyễn Khuyến), 'Autumn emotions' (by Đỗ Phủ), 'Crossing Ngang Pass' (by Bà Huyện Thanh Quan), 'Fishing in autumn' (by Nguyễn Khuyến),...
- Examples of seven-word four-line poems include: 'Rivers and mountains in the South' (author unknown), 'The fifteenth day of the first lunar month' (by Hồ Chí Minh), 'Standing in the Thiên Trường palace in the afternoon looking out' (by Trần Nhân Tông), 'Floating rice cakes' (by Hồ Xuân Hương),...
- Examples of five-word four-line poems include: 'The old man returns to the capital' (by Trần Quang Khải), 'Tranquil night' (by Lí Bạch).
The mentioned poems are classified according to poetic forms, based on the number of lines and syllables: Seven-word eight-line poems (eight lines, seven syllables each), seven-word four-line poems (four lines, seven syllables each), five-word four-line poems (four lines, five syllables each).
2. Structure of the poem
Understanding the structure of a poem will help readers access the content of the work. The structure of a classical seven-word eight-line poem traditionally consists of four parts: introduction (lines 1, 2), development (lines 3, 4), argument (lines 5, 6), conclusion (7, 8). In Đỗ Phủ's poem 'Autumn Emotions,' the author strictly adheres to the structure of a classical seven-word eight-line poem. The two introduction lines focus on describing the autumn scenery from above, the two development lines depict the autumn scenery from below. Next, the two argument lines express the loneliness of human beings before the scenery. Finally, the two conclusion lines reveal the longing for the homeland amidst human activities.
For the seven-word four-line poem, the structure is also divided into four parts: opening, elaboration, transition, corresponding to lines 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively. One of the poems written in this form is 'Floating Rice Cakes' by Hồ Xuân Hương.
3. Rhyming Techniques
In classical poetry, the poetic form dictates the rhyming techniques. For the four-line poem, typically only one rhyme is used in lines 1, 2, and 4. For example, in the poem 'Mountains and Rivers in the South' (author unknown), the rhyme 'ư' is used at the end of lines 1, 2, and 4 ('cư', 'thư', 'hư'), or the rhyme 'on' ('tròn', 'non', 'son') at the end of lines 1, 2, 4 in the poem 'Floating Rice Cakes' by Hồ Xuân Hương.
For the eight-line poem, typically only one rhyme is used in lines 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 (the last character of the first line may or may not rhyme). The poems 'Fishing in Autumn' by Nguyễn Khuyến and 'Autumn Emotions' by Đỗ Phủ strictly adhere to this rhyming technique. 'Autumn Emotions' rhymes with 'âm' ('lâm', 'sâm', 'âm', 'tâm', 'châm'), while 'Fishing in Autumn' rhymes with 'eo' ('veo', 'teo', 'vèo', 'teo', 'bèo').
4. Contrast
Classical poetry places great emphasis on contrasts and the use of diverse poetic devices. In the seven-word eight-line poem, there is often a contrast between the two development lines and the two argument lines. The corresponding words must be similar in terms of word type (same verbs, nouns, etc.). Sometimes, contrasts appear within a sentence; common examples include contrasts in terms, between the lines of one sentence and those of another, or between the two development lines and the two argument lines. Based on the contrast or harmony of meaning and words, it can be divided into two types: contrast of similarity and contrast of opposition.
5. Binding, Rules
In the eight-line poem, the first line binds with the eighth, the second with the third, the fourth with the fifth, and the sixth with the seventh to create rhythm and cohesion between the lines. Rules refer to the mutual consonance of sounds within a line. The first, third, and fifth syllables do not need to conform; however, the second, fourth, and sixth syllables must correspond in terms of sound.
For the four-line poem, adherence to binding and rules is similar to the eight-line poem.
Example: Binding and rules in the poem 'Autumn Emotions' (by Đỗ Phủ)
Classical poetry follows a strict and meticulous model, aiming for symmetry and harmony in the overall structure of the poem. This model is based on the Chinese perception of the universe, where they believe the universe is a unified entity and there is always connectivity between its parts. The formal elements in classical poetry contribute to highlighting the theme and ideas of the poem.
6. Creative Forms in Nom Classical Poetry
Strongly influenced by Chinese literature, Vietnam has also received and inherited a rich literary heritage in various forms. Particularly notable is Nom classical poetry, which is formed based on the foundation of classical poetry and the vernacular language. Our ancestors created Nom characters based on Chinese characters to record and express the meanings of Vietnamese words. Nom classical poetry, while still adhering to the formal regulations of classical poetry, has also undergone changes in rhythm and rhyme, using many images and words closely related to daily life. Hồ Xuân Hương's poem 'Self-Love' is a Nom poem that innovates in terms of form, with alterations to the binding and rules of the poem.
III. Conclusion
The characteristics of classical poetry forms are manifested through: structure, rhyme, contrast, binding, rules, etc., creating a tight and harmonious structure for the entire poem. They play an important role in expressing the content of the work as well as reflecting the poet's perspective and writing style.
