The poem depicts the regret of the character. During the stormy night, they slept soundly, unwilling to open the door for the sparrow. In the morning, the sparrow was found dead, and its nest contained eggs that could not hatch. The character regretted deeply thereafter.

Answer:
The small sparrow died in a very pitiful situation 'Died in the night near the dawn storm'. It died 'cold' in front of the house; its body was 'taken away' by a cat.

Answer:
The author is troubled and remorseful about the death of the sparrow because when the storm struck, the 'wings of the bird knocked on the door' as if seeking help, but the poet inadvertently and indifferently lay asleep:
'That night I lay under the blanket listening to the wings knock on the door
The warmth of the pillow and blanket held me tightly
And I slept soundly until the storm subsided'.
