EXERCISE ON STORYTELLING: THE LEGEND OF THE BRAVE YOUNG MAN FROM PHU UNG VILLAGE
Question 1: Listen to and retell the story of the brave young man from Phu Ung village
* Hint:
Pham Ngu Lao was a valiant general during the Tran dynasty. Even in his youth, he displayed a deep love for his country and a strong hatred for the invaders. Legend has it that one day, while deeply engrossed in contemplating matters of state by the roadside in Phu Ung village, he remained oblivious to the passing procession of Tran Hung Dao's entourage, despite the soldiers' loud calls and fervent announcements. Not even when the soldiers approached him closely and prodded him with their spears did Pham Ngu Lao stir from his reverie. Perceiving the peculiar situation, King Hung Dao descended from his carriage to investigate. Only then did the young man Pham Ngu Lao snap out of his trance and hastily offer his respects.
Tran Hung Dao inquired of him:
- Your thigh is bleeding, yet you seem unaware. How is this so?
The young man promptly replied:
- I was preoccupied with the strategies outlined in the Art of War, Your Majesty, hence my oversight. I beg your forgiveness.
Observing this, Tran Hung Dao inquired about his name, to which the young man identified himself as Pham Ngu Lao. When questioned about military tactics, he responded eloquently. Recognizing his talent, Tran Hung Dao, who valued skilled individuals, brought him to the capital. Thereafter, Pham Ngu Lao rose to prominence as a valiant general, displaying remarkable prowess on the battlefield.
Question 2: Answer the following questions:
a. Why did the soldiers spear the young man's thigh?
Because the young man was lost in thought and didn't notice Tran Hung Dao's entourage arriving. Seeing that the entourage had arrived but the young man refused to yield the way, the soldiers speared his thigh to jolt him awake and make way for the procession.
b. Why did Tran Hung Dao bring the young man to the capital?
Tran Hung Dao brought the young man to the capital out of a sense of appreciation for talented individuals. Recognizing the young man's prowess in military strategy, his patriotism, and his potential for greatness, King Hung Dao decided to bring him to the capital.
