The Dragon and the Fairy
Once upon a time, in the land of Lac Viet, there lived a divine being named Lac Long Quan. With the body of a dragon, unmatched strength, and numerous miracles, he roamed the land. In the high mountains, there resided the exquisite beauty Au Co, who had heard of the fragrant flowers and strange grasses of Lac Viet and decided to pay a visit. The two met and became husband and wife. When it came time for childbirth, Au Co gave birth to a hundred eggs. Strangely, these eggs hatched into a hundred beautiful, robust children, growing rapidly as if by magic. After living together for a short while, Lac Long Quan said to his wife:
- I am of the dragon lineage from the depths of the ocean, while you are of the fairy lineage from the high mountains. Those on land and those in water have different customs, making it difficult for us to coexist harmoniously. Therefore, I will take fifty children to the sea, while you take fifty children to the mountains. We will divide the territories and help each other whenever needed, never forgetting our promise.
A hundred descendants of Lac Long Quan and Au Co later became the ancestors of the Vietnamese people. It is through this legend that the Vietnamese often proudly refer to themselves as the Descendants of the Dragon and the Fairy, addressing each other affectionately as brethren.
