Practice Exercise
Cause 1 (page 81 of Vietnamese Literature 11 Volume 1):
In the excerpt (Textbook, p.81), the author compares 'North' and 'South':
- Similarities: The author affirms that our Dai Viet country (in the South) has all that Dai Minh country (in the North) has such as culture, territory, customs, government, heroes...
- Differences:
+ Culture: Long known for its scholarly tradition.
+ Territory: Mountains and rivers have divided the land.
+ Customs: Northern and Southern customs differ.
+ Separate governments (From Trieu, Dinh, Ly, Tran, generations establishing independence – While Chinese, Tang, Song, Yuan each claimed imperial power in their own way).
+ Heroes: Both eras have illustrious figures.
Cause 2:
These differences demonstrate that Dai Viet is an independent, autonomous country. The intention of the Northern dynasty to annex and merge Dai Viet is completely contrary to justice, and is unacceptable.
Cause 3:
This is a passage comparing role models, highly persuasive. Based on presenting similarities and differences, the author has led readers to a conclusion, that is, the independent existence of the two nations, which cannot be amalgamated. The writer's argument has been effectively achieved.
