I- Common and Proper Nouns
Answering questions (page 108 of textbook)
Question 1:
a) Step 1:
Recall the definition of nouns learned in elementary school.
b) Step 2:
The nouns highlighted in the sentence:
King remembers the merit of brave men, bestows the title of Phù Đổng Thiên Vương and erects a shrine right in Gióng village, now part of Phù Đổng commune, Gia Lâm district, Hanoi.
c) Step 3:
Read the section on common nouns (generic names for a type of object).
d) Step 4:
Identify the common nouns among the underlined nouns:
Answers: King: (refers to individuals who lead the country in feudal society).
Merit: (refers to general assistance from one person to another in a particular task).
Brave men: (refers to young characters with martial prowess in feudal times, who contributed to the nation).
Shrine: (refers to various temples, pagodas, shrines, tombs... worshipping figures revered by the people after their death).
Village, district: (refers to general residential units under a province).
e) Step 5:
Identify proper nouns (according to the section on common nouns) as specific names for individuals, objects, organizations...
Answers: Phù Đổng Thiên Vương: (honorary title for Saint Gióng)
Gióng: (name of the village where Saint Gióng was born).
Gia Lâm: (name of the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam).
g) Step 6:
Fill in the box with common and proper nouns of the types provided. as determined in the sentence.
Question 2:
Comment on proper nouns compared to common nouns. Capitalize the first letter of each component forming that proper noun. Phù Đổng Thiên Vương, Gióng, Phù Đổng, Gia Lâm, Hà Nội (note: these are proper nouns consisting of a single component).
Students practice writing correct proper nouns for their school and analyze capitalization rules: Either:
- School / Elementary / An Lý (3 components) - School - Secondary School / Liên Minh (3 components) - School - Bình Minh (2 components)
- School Secondary School / Linh Giang / Giang Minh district (4 components). Question 3: Recall the rules for capitalizing proper nouns studied.
II- Practice:
Following the teacher's guidance through the lesson, solve exercises in class and at home.
1. Identify common and proper nouns (page 109 of textbook)
+ Proper nouns: Lạc Việt, Bắc Bộ, Long Nữ, Lạc Long Quân.
+ Common nouns: In the past, region, land, country, deity, sky, dragon, son. (Note: nouns are not always a single letter (when written) or a syllable (when read)).
2. Identify proper nouns (pages 109, 110 of textbook)
- Bird, Cloud, Water, Flower, Nightingale are not proper nouns because they do not designate specific objects. Capitalize to personify these objects, making expression lively and evocative.
- Út is not a proper noun because it does not denote any specific object, only refers to the youngest child in the family. Capitalize 'a habit in Vietnam to refer to the youngest child by that name. (the child of Ba, etc...)
3. Correct the mistakes: Rewrite the poem correctly in terms of capitalization:
Who goes to Southern Vietnam.
Tiền Giang, Hậu (hậu) Giang.
Who enters Ho Chi Minh City, shining with the golden name.
Who returns to visit Bưng Biền Đồng (đồng) Tháp (tháp).
From Viet Bac to the South, the graves of our enemies, and the French (pháp).
Where our rice fields are buried, our umbilical cords cut.
Who goes to Nam – Ngãi, Bình - Phú, Khánh (khánh).
Hòa (hòa) Who enters Phan Rang (phan rang), Phan Thiết (phan thiết).
Who goes up to Tây Nguyên (tây nguyên) Kông Tum (công tun).
Đắc Lắc (đắc lắc).
Where the rugged, winding, midland gut.
Who returns to our homeland ardently.
Perfume River (hương), Ben Hai (bến hải), Cửa Tùng...
Who enters there with compatriots, comrades.
Say to half - Vietnam (Việt nam) beloved.
That: our country belongs to us.
Vietnam Democratic Republic! (việt nam dân chủ cộng hòa)
4. Spelling: Pay attention to capitalization.

Find Vietnamese names given in various ways (combining father's and mother's surnames at the beginning, consisting of multiple characters, containing meanings, names associated with memories...) that you know around you, in your family, in your class.
