I. Characteristics of Verbs:
1. Identify the verbs in the following sentences:
a. go, come, out, ask.
b. take, do, ceremony.
c. hang, have, watch, laugh, say, sell, must, set.
2. General meanings of the verbs: they are words denoting actions, states of objects.
3. What are the differences between verbs and nouns:
* Nouns:
- Do not combine with words: have, will, are, still, let, don't…
- Often serve as subject in sentences
- When serving as predicate, they must be preceded by a word.
* Verbs:
- Combine with words: have, are, will, still, let, don't…
- Often serve as predicate in sentences.
- Cannot combine with words: some, the, numeral and quantifier words.
- When verbs act as subjects (very rarely), they lose the ability to combine with words have, are, will…
III. PRACTICE:
1. Identify the verbs in the story 'The Pig's Wedding New Clothes'. Determine what types of verbs they belong to.
- Verbs indicating emotional state: have, bring, see, tell, raise.
- Verbs indicating actions, states: anger, get angry, run, stand around, praise, wait, ask, sew, wear.
2. Read the following humorous story and point out where the funny part is:
