Phishing scams are among the most effective cyber attacks. Users are deceived into clicking on harmful links or downloading virus-infected attachments. Since these fake emails closely resemble legitimate ones, it's crucial to learn how to check links safely.
ProtonMail users have the ability to report phishing and scam emails.
The company's announcement highlights Scam Phishing as one of the most effective direct attack methods. Cybercriminals can craft emails that closely resemble legitimate ones to deceive users into clicking on harmful links, downloading virus-infected attachments, or disclosing sensitive information like credit card passwords. Phishing attacks can target any email account, including encrypted ones.
To protect users and the ProtonMail community from these attacks, the company has introduced a new tool called Report Phishing. With this tool, users can easily report any fraudulent emails to the company's security team. Developers and researchers will analyze and update filtering rules to safeguard users and the ProtonMail community.
Starting today, users can report phishing emails on both the web platform and the ProtonMail app for Android and iOS devices. On the web platform, users simply need to open an email, click the More arrow, then select Report phishing. Similarly, on mobile apps, users just need to open an email, click the More arrow (iOS) or three dots (Android), then select Report phishing.
After selecting to report a phishing email, a popup window will appear on the screen where users press Confirm to confirm. The company will analyze the email's header and content to enhance the spam filter.
