Microsoft Edge 93 features a redesigned interface on Windows 11 and Windows 10

Windows 11 is set to debut on October 5. Prior to this schedule, Microsoft Edge 93 will be released, accompanied by two experimental features: a new design for menus and modern scrollbars to align with the Fluent Design style of the new generation operating system.

Microsoft Edge 93 is released with several enhancements and some new features. For example, Microsoft has added support for tab groups similar to Chrome, designed to help users efficiently search for tabs, so they can easily switch and manage tabs.

Experience seamless video playback with Edge 93's Picture-in-Picture mode, effortlessly accessible through the new toolbar option that appears when hovering over supported videos. The vertical tab design has been refreshed with an additional setting in edge://settings/export to hide the browser's title bar. In addition to these enhancements, the software giant has also introduced support for two corresponding flags for two new experimental features: Windows 11 Visual Updates and Overlay Scrollbars.

The first experimental feature brings the Mica effect, a new exclusive design material of Windows 11 that automatically applies the screen background color to the active window. The Mica effect is only applied to the browser's title bar, as you can see in the screenshot below.

Additionally, the Fluent Design's Acrylic effect (part of transparency) is also applied to the Edge menu and context menu. Enabling the Windows 11 Visual Updates flag on Windows 11 adjusts the menu font size to display slightly larger. Alongside font changes, some buttons, including minimize, maximize, and close, have been centered.

On the other hand, the Overlay Scrollbar will be fully supported on both Windows 11 and Windows 10. The Overlay Scrollbars flag provides a sleek design for the browser's default scrollbar and also supports dark mode.

More importantly, the Overlay Scrollbars feature is designed to blend seamlessly with the interface of Windows 11 apps such as Settings and Explorer. To try out these features, you'll need Edge 93 stable or newer. Once updated to the latest version, open the Edge flags menu and enable the Windows 11 Visual Updates flag.

To experiment with the new scrollbars in Edge 93, open Edge's Properties tab and add the following code to the target field: --enable-features=OverlayScrollbar,OverlayScrollbarWinStyle,OverlayScrollbarWinStyleAnimation

Microsoft may introduce additional design updates for Edge in the coming months for Windows 11 users.
