A prosperous nation is one that harbors numerous talents, and the key to that success lies in its people. Each individual not only needs talent but, fundamentally, ethical qualities. At the very least, every person should possess four virtues: Ritual, Righteousness, Integrity, and Shame.
While these four virtues are easy to understand, embodying them is not an instantaneous task. Ritual is about norms, standardized behaviors; righteousness is the practical application of ethical actions according to ritual. Integrity signifies purity, cleanliness, living in alignment with moral and legal principles. Shame is the inner feeling of embarrassment, disgrace. Without these qualities, both an individual and a nation become imperfect—a person lacking in completeness, a nation susceptible to downfall.
First and foremost is Ritual, a crucial aspect that encompasses long-standing, standardized behaviors. Imagine a society without norms; every citizen acting on their whims would lead to disorder and a lack of respect. This could result in a chaotic nation, devoid of order and decorum. Hence, in the Vietnamese folklore, there are many proverbs emphasizing 'ritual,' such as 'respect above, yield below,' 'respect the teacher, honor the principles,' etc. Therefore, ritual is always a vital pillar within each individual and, by extension, a nation as a whole.
Meaning is manifested in various aspects. Firstly, it's in familial bonds like parental and teacher-student relationships, friendships, and siblings. Everyone should root their actions in 'humanity' as living requires a sense of humanity, a moral principle. Proverbs like 'sell a sibling far, buy a neighbor close' and 'eating fruit but remembering the tree planter' highlight the significance of relational meanings. Additionally, meaning extends to moral integrity. Brave soldiers, driven by a strong sense of moral integrity, courageously fight to protect their homeland, even if facing death with 'falling on the gun, forgetting the world.' Meaning is truly precious!
Integrity is purity, straightforwardness, and cleanliness. It elevates the noble beauty of human beings. Greed, though offering immediate benefits, is a vice that can lead to substantial destruction in the long run. Therefore, individuals need purity and cleanliness, even if living in any environment, as seen in the saying 'near mud but not smelling of mud.' The poor work hard for honest earnings, officials work diligently and justly. Although corruption still occurs, those engaging in such misconduct will face rightful consequences.
The last but equally crucial pillar is 'Shame.' Individuals must feel shame and embarrassment for their wrongdoings. More importantly, they should feel disgrace when failing to surpass mediocrity. Our nation, through history, faced external invasions and attained independence after numerous bloodshed battles. This was possible due to the people's self-respect and self-esteem, standing up to fight for independence when the nation was violated. Shame is a necessary character for personal development.
It must be acknowledged that all four virtues, Ritual, Righteousness, Integrity, and Shame, are essential. Losing any of these is a significant loss for an individual and even a nation. The key to a strong nation is its people; hence, self-improvement, training, and self-cultivation are paramount. Today, we live in peace, and especially the younger generation must strive to study diligently and cultivate these virtues to maintain the beauty of our nation.
