Sơn Tinh Thủy Tinh is a story intertwined with everyone's childhood. It not only recounts the fierce battle between the two deities but also serves as a legend to explain the calamitous natural phenomena and the achievements in the process of water governance and conquering nature by the Vietnamese people.
The encounter and rivalry between the two deities begin when the 18th Hung King seeks a husband for his daughter, named Mị Nương, a gentle and exquisitely beautiful girl. Enthralled by her beauty and personality, both Sơn Tinh and Thủy Tinh come to ask for her hand in marriage. However, their simultaneous appearance perplexes King Hùng, who is torn between the two equally matched contenders. One is the lord of the highlands, while the other reigns over the rivers and waters. Unable to weigh their talents and strengths, the king decides to choose a son-in-law by offering a challenge: whoever brings enough bridal gifts and presents them first will marry Mị Nương.
The next morning, Sơn Tinh arrives first with the bridal gifts and wins Mị Nương's hand in marriage, while Thủy Tinh arrives late and misses out. At this point, one might expect Thủy Tinh to be sorrowful and heartbroken for losing the woman he loves. However, instead of grief, he harbors resentment towards Sơn Tinh and summons rain and wind to drive away his romantic rival.
Consumed by hatred, Thủy Tinh becomes furious, summoning storms that shake the heavens and the earth, causing floods that engulf homes and fields. Faced with the mad rage of his enemy, Sơn Tinh remains calm, exerting his strength to lift hills and create barriers against the rising waters. The battle of wits and strength continues for months on end, until Thủy Tinh grows weary and retreats. However, he refuses to admit defeat and every year, he floods the land to retaliate against Sơn Tinh. This event is believed to be the origin of the continuous occurrence of natural disasters such as storms and floods every year, followed by their retreat.
