Recently, at the United Nations General Assembly on September 21 in New York City, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and the Minister of Internal Affairs had to dine curbside. Bolsonaro failed to comply with the requirement to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate at the city's restaurants. This moment was shared by the Chief of the Presidential Staff, Luiz Eduardo Ramos, on Twitter with the caption 'Elegant dinner in New York.'Bolsonaro's supporters argue that the sidewalk scenes depict his down-to-earth nature. However, others believe he is too conservative and endorses the anti-vaccination sentiments of the public.
Jair Bolsonaro gained notoriety for his vaccine skepticism, proudly declaring he never took the vaccine, asserting his immune system's strength against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Moreover, he once claimed he would be the last person in Brazil to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Bolsonaro has faced controversies over non-compliance with pandemic regulations, even receiving fines for not wearing a mask.During the second-day meeting, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson queried Bolsonaro's vaccination status, to which he curtly replied, 'not yet.' Previously, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, in a press conference, urged global leaders, notably Bolsonaro from Brazil, stating that if they intend to visit, vaccination is a must. He added, 'If you're not willing to get vaccinated, then don't come.' Some leaders opted for virtual participation due to pandemic concerns.
Fortunately for him, the United Nations headquarters doesn't mandate international delegates to show vaccination certificates upon entry. However, New York City mandates anyone dining in a restaurant to have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine or possess a certificate of prior infection. Hence, there were moments of both humor and frustration in these situations.According to NDTV
