The land of Dien Bien Phu is linked with numerous historical landmarks such as Muong Thanh, the Him Lam resistance center, and many more sites that have etched their names in history books. Particularly notable is Hill A1, the site of a historic battle lasting 39 days and nights. A1 is the symbol that the Vietnamese army designated for this hill.
Hill A1 is situated within the jurisdiction of Muong Thanh ward, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province. It was once the foremost stronghold in the French colonial stronghold system in Dien Bien Phu. Hill A1 stretches from the Northwest to the Southeast, encompassing 2 peaks: the Northwest peak rising over 490m high and the Southeast peak over 493m high. Following numerous extremely fierce battles that took place here, the Vietnamese army seized Hill A1 at 4 am on May 7, 1954.
Stepping foot on Hill A1, one cannot help but be surprised by the tranquil atmosphere of the fortifications, where fierce battles once unfolded. Nowadays, this hill has transformed into a memorial cemetery commemorating the heroes and martyrs who fell during the Dien Bien Phu campaign.
Situated to the East of the central area of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold system, Hill A1 is a high point of utmost importance in the system of 5 hills to the East protecting the central area of Muong Thanh. Here, the enemy once deployed numerous troops and powerful firepower, with solid and fortified defenses. This posed a challenge for our army when advancing on this position.
After 39 days and nights of persistent digging of a tunnel, placing nearly 1000 pounds of explosives, on May 6, 1954, after the fire point, our troops successfully captured this stronghold. This victory marked the beginning of the final total offensive against the Headquarters of the stronghold system, resulting in complete victory.
