Retell the story of the Elephant Seer in my own words
Sample essay: Retelling the tale of the Elephant Seer in my own words
I am a girl living by the seaside, befriending the waves, boats, and fishes every day. My village has heard of a large creature that only lives in places like the vast green forests. None of us in the village know what it looks like. Everyone in the village has a desire to see this creature at least once in their lifetime.
Fortunately, one day, the village chief announced that a herd of elephants was passing through. At first, no one in the village knew what an elephant was, but because the village chief explained it, it turned out that the elephant was the name of the creature that everyone in my village longed to see. Especially during the year of the fortune teller, those who are considered to know many things in life.
Early in the morning, many villagers stood on both sides of the road waiting to see the elephant procession, among which there were certainly five blind fortune tellers. And then that moment came, when the elephant procession appeared, everyone was amazed, opening their eyes wide to see. The five blind fortune tellers, because they could not see, the village chief asked the elephant owner to stop so that the villagers could see more clearly and also for the five blind fortune tellers to touch and feel the elephant to imagine what it looked like?
The five blind fortune tellers, without saying a word to each other, all approached the elephant and began to touch it. But ironically, each fortune teller only touched a part of the elephant. One touched the ivory, one touched the ears, one touched the legs, one touched the tail. All the fortune tellers felt happy to see the elephant for the first time. They touched very carefully, and based on their feelings, they all made their own observations.
After the elephant procession had passed, the fortune tellers sat down together and discussed their opinions. The one who touched the trunk said: 'Thought the elephant was like this but it feels smooth like a leech'.
The one who touched the legs said again: 'No, it's sturdy like a pillar'. I sat there feeling quite surprised, why did they have such comments? And I tried to listen to more stories and the rest of the fortune tellers' remarks.
- The one who touched the ears said: 'No, it's flappy like a winnowing fan'
- The one who touched the legs argued: 'No, it's firm like the columns of a temple'
- And the one who touched the tail said: 'You're all wrong, I touched it very carefully, it's rough like a worn-out broom.
So the fortune tellers argued vehemently, almost coming to blows.
Just then, the village elder stepped in to intervene and explain.
- The fortune tellers were all correct in their own way. Each had their own reasoning. However, each fortune teller only touched one part of the elephant. A creature as large as that elephant has many different parts, so by combining everyone's opinions, we can envision the elephant, gentlemen.
Upon hearing the village elder's words, the fortune tellers ceased their argument and consolidated everyone's opinions. In the end, they all imagined the elephant they had longed to see.
So there you have it, folks, the fable 'The Elephant Fortune Teller' is not just a funny story, it also leaves us profound lessons: 'When assessing any issue, we need to consider all aspects comprehensively and holistically. We shouldn't have a narrow-minded view to conclude about an object.' Additionally, the story reminds us to learn how to listen to others' opinions.
