Through research, I learned that Bưởi had a very difficult upbringing, losing his father at a young age and helping his mother with street vending to make a living. Despite his rugged appearance, he was handsome, intelligent, and compassionate, qualities that led a wealthy family, the Bạch family, to adopt him and name him Bạch Thái Bưởi, providing him with education and care.
Growing up, Bạch Thái Bưởi eagerly served as a secretary for a trading company, absorbing business experiences. Eventually, he ventured into entrepreneurship, dabbling in various trades from pawnshops, timber trading, printing houses, to mining, aiming to find a sustainable business model. The once young Bưởi has now matured and decided to establish a large waterway transport company named 'Bạch Thái Bưởi' with the slogan: 'Others have boats, but ours reigns supreme.' By stirring up patriotic sentiments among the people of Annam, he garnered widespread support. His passionate and well-organized speeches aboard ships inspired immense contributions, greatly aiding shipowners. When the piggy bank was broken open, coins and bills flowed endlessly. Visitors flocked in greater numbers by the day. Despite the strength of Chinese and French vessels at that time, none could rival Bạch Thái Bưởi's business strategy, forcing them to sell their ships to him.
Continuing his journey, he recruited skilled engineers to establish a ship repair workshop. The company flourished, boasting over 30 vessels, both large and small, with prominent names like Hồng Bàng, Trưng Nhị, and Lạc Long, each synonymous with the name Bạch Thái Bưởi. In a short span of time, through his intelligence, cunning, and keen business acumen, Bạch Thái Bưởi built an empire that few could match. People admired and revered him, addressing him with great respect: 'The Sea King.'
