In general, with a 24.2 MP sensor, 45-point autofocus system, and 6fps shooting speed, the Canon 800D perfectly fulfills the needs of beginners in photography, and even surpasses expectations!
Advantages:
- Excellent build quality compared to other DSLR competitors or even non-flip-screen cameras in the same segment.
- Good ergonomic grip, high traction, solid feel. The camera's handgrip gives a reassuring feeling when in use, it's deep and provides good grip!
- The LCD screen displays high-quality images with flexible multi-angle rotation. Overall, Canon EOS 800D's screen is highly praised, among low-level DSLRs, very few cameras have a great screen like Canon's in terms of both display quality and flexibility.
- The button system is conveniently arranged for use, almost every important setting has its own button. This helps you change these settings much faster than having to access the menu.
Limitations:
- The camera lacks waterproof, dustproof, or weather-resistant capabilities. However, it can still be used outdoors in light rain.
- The camera only has one dial to change the exposure mode, while some competitors like Nikon D5600 or mirrorless cameras have an additional dial. If Canon adds another one, it will definitely be much better!
For newcomers to professional photography, there's probably nothing to complain about the camera's features. Because Canon EOS 800D has everything you want and most commonly used. However, the camera still lacks some features that professional photographers may need. For example:
You can't set the minimum shutter speed when the camera is in automatic ISO mode. This can be said to be the most obvious shortcoming of this Canon camera, as many photographers rely on this feature to shoot action photos in aperture priority mode. At this point, the minimum shutter speed and ISO will depend entirely on your focal length. To put it simply: When you're shooting action photos in aperture priority mode, you won't be able to use automatic ISO because the shutter speed may be too slow at that time!
While Nikon D5600 (a direct competitor of Canon 800D) offers the feature to press the shutter button once to start exposure, then at any point, you press the shutter button again to end the exposure process, Canon 800D lacks this. This is a very useful feature for capturing long exposures, especially when there's no supporting equipment.
Autofocus System of Canon EOS 800D
The camera's 45-point autofocus system performs excellently even with fast-moving and static subjects. Although it may not be perfect for tracking fast-moving subjects, for most daily needs, it's more than sufficient.
The camera meets the photography needs of most sports, stage, or wildlife photography. Overall, you will encounter very few or no issues at all with the camera's autofocus system!
However, Canon's renowned Dual Pixel autofocus technology ensures smooth and fast focusing when using live view. If you frequently focus on the LCD screen while taking photos or shooting videos, you will likely be thoroughly impressed by the EOS 800D's Dual Pixel technology. This feature is truly superior to many competitors from Nikon.
Image Quality
The new sensor generation on Canon EOS 800D shows a significant improvement compared to previous generations. It delivers excellent image quality. Here are some sample shots:
As you can see at ISO 800 and ISO 1,600, the images from 800D are of good quality and can be used normally. In some cases, images at ISO 3200 can still be usable.
Video Recording on Canon EOS 800D
It's quite peculiar that Canon EOS 800D lacks 4K video capability, however, Full HD quality at a maximum speed of 60 frames per second is more than sufficient for basic needs!
There are 2 notable points about video recording on 800D:
- The camera integrates optical image stabilization within the body (only applicable for video recording, not for still photography). This stabilization system works very effectively and makes a noticeable difference compared to not using it.
- The Dual Pixel autofocus system helps you focus quickly and accurately by touching the LCD screen
Additionally, the camera also features an external microphone port to enhance the quality of recorded audio.
