Review of OPPO Find N3: Well-Optimized Software, Powerful Performance, Hasselblad Portrait Camera

In recent years, the foldable phone market has been gaining trust and popularity among users. This has driven manufacturers to continuously develop and refine the best foldable phones possible to meet these demands. In October 2023, OPPO impressed many users with the launch of the OPPO Find N3 and OPPO Find N3 Flip. Among them, the OPPO Find N3 stands out with its high-quality finish, powerful hardware specifications, and well-optimized software. Here are the experiences I had while reviewing the OPPO Find N3.

The software on the OPPO Find N3 is well-optimized, providing a convenient multitasking experience

One of the biggest advantages of the OPPO Find N3 is its well-optimized software, providing a more convenient experience with the large screen. Specifically, I can open 3 apps at the same time, with two apps arranged vertically and one app below, easily arranged by dragging and dropping. What I like is that the screen ratio is arranged reasonably, so using 3 apps is very comfortable.

Additionally, I can also stack three apps vertically and swipe back and forth to use them. However, not all apps installed on the OPPO Find N3 are arranged vertically. I can only drag Messenger, Chrome, Zalo, etc. This may be because many apps are not optimized or partly because the screen ratio of that app does not allow vertical stacking to work. Besides, I only need to drag the screen corners when turned on to have 3 apps minimized for me to handle 3 tasks at once. However, whether stacked horizontally or vertically, the user experience on this phone's screen is very smooth and stable.

Furthermore, I also keep one app running in the background while using other tasks on the OPPO Find N3 screen in the form of a floating window. When not in use, I can quickly swipe to the right edge to hide it, and when needed, just pull it out. This makes everything more convenient and faster when working.

To set up these features, simply go to the settings of the OPPO Find N3 and then navigate to the Main screen section. Here, you need to enable all the features, allowing the phone's system to multitask multiple apps at once and adjust the aspect ratio of the app screens. It's also through this feature that I activate the dual-screen usage mode, where when you close the internal screen, the external screen continues the task without altering the screen ratio.

Overall, OPPO has optimized the software well on the OPPO Find N3, and I can smoothly use all apps, multitask comfortably without worrying about lagging. However, third-party apps are a different story, especially Facebook and games. With Facebook, the interface is enlarged and looks cumbersome, giving the feeling that the app just zooms everything in without proper resizing. That's why I often use the external screen rather than the internal one.

However, the games I usually play encounter display ratio issues on the OPPO Find N3, and I'll describe them in more detail in the performance section below. In my opinion, the problem lies with game developers who haven't focused enough on foldable phones like the OPPO Find N3. I hope game manufacturers will address this issue in the future as foldable smartphones become more popular.

The OPPO Find N3 delivers performance that meets all my usage needs

Before delving into details, let me summarize the specifications of the OPPO Find N3 for reference:

• Main screen: 7.82-inch size, LTPO OLED display, 2K+ resolution (2,440 x 2,268 pixels), 120 Hz refresh rate.
• Secondary screen: 6.31-inch size, LTPO AMOLED display, Full HD+ resolution (2,484 x 1,116 pixels), 120 Hz refresh rate.
• Chipset: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
• RAM: 16 GB.
• Internal Memory: 512 GB.
• Front Camera: 48 MP + 48 MP + 64 MP.
• Rear Camera: 20 MP (inside), 32 MP (outside).
• Battery: 4,805 mAh, 67 W fast charging support.
• Operating System: ColorOS 13.2 - Android 13.

The OPPO Find N3 is equipped with the familiar Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor from Qualcomm, featuring a 3.19 GHz Cortex-X3 main core, 2 2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 cores, 2 2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 cores, and 3 2.0 GHz Cortex-A510 cores for power efficiency. Additionally, the powerful Adreno 740 GPU is responsible for graphics, delivering optimal performance in multimedia applications and games.

Moreover, the OPPO Find N3 is equipped with 28 GB of RAM (16 GB main RAM + 12 GB virtual RAM). With ample RAM capacity, the device offers seamless multitasking capabilities. Coupled with up to 512 GB of internal storage, you have ample space to store essential data and applications.

• Gaming Experience on OPPO Find N3

In this section, I'll download 5 popular games: Arena of Valor, PUBG Mobile, Call Of Duty Mobile, Honkai: Star Rails, and Genshin Impact to test the real gaming performance of OPPO Find N3. Additionally, I'll use the Perfdog software to record the FPS of each game and related data. You can find the data here for reference.

Most games run smoothly on the highest graphics settings with OPPO Find N3, maintaining stable FPS. Additionally, the phone's cooling system is efficient, preventing overheating during extended gaming sessions. However, the screen aspect ratio issue persists, with characters appearing enlarged and narrowed on the sides, reducing visibility.

For games like PUBG Mobile, Call Of Duty Mobile, Honkai: Star Rails, and Genshin Impact, the large screen aspect ratio doesn't significantly impact gameplay. However, with Liên Quân Mobile, the narrowed width makes it challenging to dodge unexpected enemies, so I prefer playing on the external screen, and I recommend others do the same with OPPO Find N3.

Despite the aspect ratio drawback, OPPO Find N3 delivers a smooth gaming experience for popular games. However, I still advise everyone to use default settings when playing heavy titles like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail to ensure the best experience.

Overall, OPPO Find N3 can handle all current popular games well. However, it faces shortcomings in optimizing the aspect ratio of games. Nevertheless, this issue can be addressed when third-party manufacturers deeply engage in this market. In addition to gaming performance, I also conducted performance evaluations of OPPO Find N3 to provide a more comprehensive view of the device's power.

• Performance evaluation of OPPO Find N3

In this section, I used three specialized benchmarking software: Geekbench 6, 3DMark, PCMark, under specific conditions as follows:

• The device battery must be between 90 - 100% (battery below 90% will affect the device performance and results).
• Do not charge the battery while benchmarking.
• Conduct 3 consecutive benchmarks and take the average result after 3 times.

- Geekbench 6:

• GPU Compute (OpenCL): 8,412 points.
• Single-Core/Multi-Core: 968 points/3,896 points.

- PCMark: 10,057 points.

- 3DMark Solar Bay:

• Total score: 5,320 points.
• Average FPS: 20.23.

- 3DMark Solar Bay Stress Test:

• Highest loop score: 5,319 points.
• Lowest loop score: 3,592 points.
• Difference between highest and lowest loop: 1,727 points.
• Stability level: 67.5%.

Summing up the performance evaluation, OPPO Find N3 achieves very good scores and competes well compared to many other regular or foldable products I've evaluated before. This is further demonstrated through the most rigorous test with a stability level of 67.5%. Additionally, I believe that with future updates, OPPO will enhance the stability even further.

OPPO Find N3's Hasselblad camera brings impressive photography experience

After partnering with Hasselblad, OPPO has made significant strides in mobile photography, especially with the highly acclaimed OPPO Find X6 series. This trend continues with OPPO Find N3, which is equipped with a top-of-the-line camera system. Before diving into details, let me summarize the camera specifications of OPPO Find N3 for everyone to have a better overview!

• Main wide-angle camera: 48 MP resolution, f/1.7 aperture, 24 mm focal length, dual pixel PDAF, OIS.
• Ultra-wide camera: 48 MP resolution, f/2.2 aperture, 14 mm focal length, 114˚ field of view, PDAF.
• Telephoto camera: 64 MP resolution, f/2.6 aperture, 70mm focal length, PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom.
• Front under-display selfie camera: 20 MP resolution, f/2.2 aperture.
• Front outer-display selfie camera: 32 MP resolution, f/2.4 aperture.

Regarding the main camera of OPPO Find N3, the image quality is balanced in all aspects. There's nothing particularly outstanding with good details, decent white balance, moderate contrast, and very few occurrences of noise.

Additionally, the zoom image quality from the main camera of OPPO Find N3 is very good, with minimal distortion. However, there's significant shaking when taking photos, so you need to hold the device firmly to capture the best shot.

As for the wide-angle camera, OPPO Find N3 still maintains very good photo quality. Although the corners remain sharp enough, colors are harmonious, and have been well-adjusted by AI, distortion still occurs. This is entirely normal as the majority of wide-angle cameras on phones encounter this issue.

However, the portrait mode on the OPPO Find N3 is the real highlight of this phone. Portrait photos taken from the phone's camera stand out the subject against the background. Additionally, the image details are relatively sharp, and the skin tone looks natural, but details like hair or the subject's glasses are sometimes blurred.

In terms of capturing human subjects in auto mode, I find the OPPO Find N3 camera performs relatively well, whether outdoors or indoors. The images produced have clear details and balanced colors.

The OPPO Find N3 also allows for taking selfies with two front cameras, or you can use the four rear cameras with the support of the external display.

The outer selfie camera has a resolution of 32 MP and produces good image details but the colors appear slightly muted compared to reality, perhaps due to less-than-optimal software processing. Therefore, I recommend utilizing the rear camera for better photo quality.

The OPPO Find N3 design is elegant and sturdy, but with a few minor drawbacks

Compared to its predecessor, the OPPO Find N3 doesn't feature many design language differences. The product still adopts the clamshell design and remains compact with overall dimensions of 166.42 x 75.78 x 7.79 mm. As a result, the device offers a very comfortable and lightweight grip, weighing only about 239 grams.

Additionally, the frame of the OPPO Find N3 is squared off as usual, but to ensure the most comfortable grip for users, the edges and corners have been slightly rounded. This allows for a very snug fit in the hand.

Furthermore, the hinge of the OPPO Find N3 ensures that the two halves of the folding screen fit closely together, resulting in a very neat overall appearance. However, the hinge of this phone is not as flexible as expected. Specifically, the hinge can expand rigidly at about 50 to 125 degrees, while at higher or lower angles, the device will automatically fold open/close. It can be said that it's not as rigid as other foldable phones I've used.

The issue with this hinge mechanism is not unique to OPPO or the OPPO Find N3, as many products from China have similar hinge mechanisms. However, based on my observations from various tech news sources and reviews, this hinge mechanism is considered quite sturdy, so users can be somewhat reassured about its durability.

Additionally, the back of the OPPO Find N3 is a plus point due to its leather material. Thanks to this, the grip feels not only smooth but also effectively prevents sweat and fingerprint smudges. Moreover, this phone also comes with a variant featuring a frosted glass back for those who do not prefer leather material.

Furthermore, the most prominent feature of the overall design of the OPPO Find N3 is the large and round camera module on the back. This camera module is quite large and is somewhat reminiscent of the OPPO Find X6 Series. However, this is also a drawback that makes the grip experience somewhat uncomfortable. Specifically, when holding it, I often feel that my hand is being pinched due to frequent contact with the camera module, partly because the length of the device is relatively short.

The large camera module on the OPPO Find N3 not only causes discomfort when used but also tilts when placed on a flat surface and feels bulky when put in a pocket. Therefore, I believe this is not the optimal design for this phone, even though it makes the product look rugged and stand out. Instead, I think a compact camera design like the OPPO Find N2 would be more beautiful and practical for viewing and handling. So, I hope OPPO will change this design in future iterations for better harmony.

The foldable screen of the OPPO Find N3 offers a visually pleasing and seamless display experience

In terms of display specifications, the front screen of the OPPO Find N3 has a size of 6.31 inches, Full HD+ resolution (2,484 x 1,116 pixels), a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and operates on LTPO AMOLED panel. For me, the external screen size and specifications provide a similar experience to regular smartphones. All touch interactions have fast, smooth response and good display quality, so I often use the external screen more than the internal one.

When unfolded, the OPPO Find N3's display now measures 7.82 inches with a 2K+ resolution (2,440 x 2,268 pixels), operating on LTPO AMOLED panel, 120 Hz refresh rate, and a screen brightness of up to 1,400 nits.

Overall, all content displayed on this device is detailed, vibrant, and satisfying in terms of display quality. Especially, the fold crease on this screen is almost invisible, so the OPPO Find N3 offers a seamless, uninterrupted display experience.

The OPPO Find N3's 4,805 mAh battery delivers decent battery life

The OPPO Find N3 is equipped with a 4,805 mAh battery, which is a large capacity compared to many other foldable devices on the market. To provide you with a clearer understanding of the battery life of the OPPO Find N3, I conducted a battery test following The Gioi Di Dong's standards under specific conditions:

• Experience 4 rotating tasks including: Playing Liên Quân (graphics settings as shown below), watching YouTube, browsing Facebook, and using the Chrome browser.

• Each task lasts for 1 hour.
• A SIM card is inserted into the device.
• Screen brightness is set to 100%, refresh rate at 120 Hz.
• External speaker is on with 50% volume.
• WiFi and social media notifications are enabled.
• Battery saver, adaptive display, GPS, and Bluetooth are off.
• Drained from 100% to 0%.

Here are the specific results:

As seen in the measurement table above, the OPPO Find N3 can endure for 6 hours and 50 minutes under the rigorous testing conditions set by The Gioi Di Dong. This is a very good result and competes well with many other foldable phones I've had hands-on experience with. Moreover, when excluding the test conditions mentioned above, the device can provide nearly a full day's usage on a single charge.

In addition, even if the OPPO Find N3 runs out of battery, I'm not overly concerned about charging standby time. This is because the device is equipped with SuperVOOC 67W fast charging capability. Specifically, take a look at the chart below.

It can be seen that I only need to wait 43 minutes to fully charge the OPPO Find N3 (0% - 100%), which is perfectly aligned with the charging power. In urgent situations, I only need to wait 15 minutes to have enough charge for half a day's use.

Conclusion

With its software, performance, battery, camera, and design advantages, the OPPO Find N3 deserves to be the go-to foldable smartphone at the current moment. Furthermore, I believe that in the future, OPPO will release several additional updates promising even better optimization.
