Adapted storyline, familiar yet fresh
Tây Du VNG: Great Adventure in Three Realms begins with the experience of the main character, a normal person accepted as a disciple by Bodhi Patriarch with a reason kept secret. After a series of activities with his close fellow apprentice sisters, you realize you have a special ability to see future visions, including the rebellion against the heavenly court by Golden-winged Great Peng.
With the purpose of reporting to the heavenly court, you and your fellow disciples seek out the celestial palace and are tested by Dương Tiễn, one of the strongest celestial generals. The Heavenly Emperor accepts the audience, and after hearing the explanation, he concludes that you are the one with the special ability that the heavenly court is seeking.
The main character is appointed and sent to be the liaison between the Heavenly Court and Guanyin to support the planned scripture-requesting journey long planned. The disciple of the Tathagata is Kim Thiền Tử, who is reborn into the mortal world as the mage Huyền Trang with the mission of bringing the scriptures from the East to help stabilize people's minds and prevent the chaos of the three realms. After the continuous failures of the 9 previous lifetimes, the appearance of the main character in this 10th lifetime is expected to increase the chances of success.
So from an anonymous person, you are evaluated as the second strongest disciple of Bodhi Patriarch, alongside Sun Wukong. Your work begins even before Tang Sanzang sets off, with steps to 'clear the way' for the 10th lifetime of Kim Thiền Tử.
phimIt can be said that this is an interesting change when players, in their role as heavenly messengers, actively participate in pushing forward the journey of scripture-requesting. But the change only stops there, while the development of the journey and the tribulations are arranged in a familiar manner as in the classic series of 1986.
Beautiful graphics with cartoon style
Tây Du VNG: Great Adventure in Three Realms is equipped with beautiful 2D cartoon graphics. The character models in battle are depicted in a mini form, while the full-body avatars are meticulously drawn, with many details. The drawing style follows a modern Chinese cartoon style, with a hint of anime but not entirely similar to the Japanese style.
The game interface is also well-designed with reasonable layouts, easy on the eyes. All functions have their own interface with different layouts, but overall they display good buttons, icons, and illustrations. Some interfaces are made very lively, like the hero summoning section with images of the Japanese pair Nhat Da Du Thần revolving around each other like the balance of yin and yang. The main interface of the game also shows the heroes in the team sitting in positions like in a living room, each person will say a classic line of their own.
Gameplay with new variations
Tây Du VNG: Great Adventure in Three Realms still follows the framework of a card role-playing game with familiar features. From team arrangement, power calculation, resource side missions to arena ranking battles... However, some features are specially improved to create differences in gameplay.
First and perhaps the most impressive difference for newcomers is the Celestial Skills feature. Each hero will have a skill that can be 'copied' to another hero for use. These skills are often internal strength-enhancing types, but there are also special abilities such as summoning a long-lasting illusion. Each hero will have 3 slots to receive Celestial Skills, so increasing the strength and playstyle of the team will be very sophisticated and offer many choices.
Tây Du VNG: Great Adventure in Three Realms also abandons the familiar five-element clash style. Instead, the game develops a unique fighting style for each faction. This is a noteworthy unique point of the game because it does not impose limits like the five elements. Each faction has its own strengths and different ways of exploitation.
The game divides characters into 4 faction groups. The Holy Realm with characters belonging to Buddhist sects, the 5 master-disciple pairs of Tang Sanzang, and those who cultivate the Dao with celestial power towards continuous strikes. The Immortal Realm includes celestial beings belonging to the Celestial Court with celestial power towards bodyguard spells. The Dark Realm includes demonic monsters and minions of the King of Hell, the underworld with poisonous and death-oriented celestial power. The Demon Realm includes extraordinary demonic monsters and a fighting style based on using fire to burn and cause long-term damage.
Especially, the skills of heroes of the same faction tend to complement each other to form a collective strength. For example, in the Demon Realm faction, Niu Ma Vương has a skill that causes burning to all enemy units, while Thiết Phiến Công Chúa has a skill that uses a three-section fan to prolong the burning condition of enemies. This unique point will make players tend to use heroes of the same faction to optimize complementary skills.
The game also reuses the hero linking feature with the requirement that linked heroes must be in the same team to increase their strength. Personally, I think this old-style constraint is more realistic and more strategic. Players have to choose heroes so that they are closely linked in combat rather than just collecting enough and activating their combat power.
Speaking of activating combat power, Tây Du VNG: Great Adventure in Three Realms also does not cut this benefit but transfers it to the Book of a Hundred Objects section. Just by summoning a new hero, they will appear in the collection and add strength to the whole team.
All of these new features will appear within the first 3 days of joining the game. This means that other improved features may await players deeper into the late game journey.
Conclusion
Overall, Tây Du VNG: Great Adventure in Three Realms is a fairly quality product of the card role-playing genre. Besides the familiar yet fresh storyline, beautiful 2D graphics, the gameplay is also invested with many unexpected changes. Furthermore, the game offers a rare benefit of giving 10 hero summoning chances every day, lasting forever without expiration.
There is only one confusing point: the stage crossing and storyline are designed quite 'crude'. You have to fight whoever you talk to, regardless of whether they are on your side or the enemy side. So you meet Tang Sanzang, you still have to fight, meet a heavenly relative, Quan Âm coming down to support, you still have to fight before. Quite strange.
