One of the highly anticipated factors for the 2023 season is the changes in the format of international tournaments by League of Legends fans. Currently, the League of Legends scene boasts only 2 major international tournaments: MSI 2023 and Worlds 2023. Following the conclusion of the Spring Split, fans eagerly await MSI 2023, set to be held in London with fresh changes.
Recently, Riot has officially announced the format for MSI 2023. One of the most significant changes is the tournament's expansion from 11 to 13 teams. Matches will officially commence from May 2nd and conclude on May 21st (local time). Specifically:
- Play-in Stage: May 2nd - May 7th
- Group Stage: May 9th - May 14th and May 16th - May 20th
- Finals: May 21st
Matches will kick off at 9 p.m. Vietnam time. Tickets will be available for sale starting from February 23rd (local time).
With the increase in the number of participating teams to 13, Riot also boosts the representation for the 4 major regions (Major). Specifically, LPL, LCK, LEC, and LCS will have 2 representatives for each region attending MSI 2023 this time. The theme for MSI 2023 will be DEFY - despite all hardships and obstacles, teams will have to showcase their strength to claim ultimate glory.
Another eagerly anticipated change by League of Legends fans is the implementation of the double elimination format for the first time in an international League of Legends tournament. This format, also known as the winners' bracket - losers' bracket, is not unfamiliar to the Esports community. Games like DOTA 2 or CS:GO have previously applied the double elimination format. Even in the League of Legends scene, tournaments like LPL or LEC, LCS have applied this format and many times the champion is a team that has risen from the losers' bracket.
According to Riot's explanation, the application of double elimination aims to provide more opportunities for teams to compete for the championship title. Additionally, implementing this format will allow viewers to watch more exciting matches as the world's top League of Legends teams compete.
