Facing community condemnation, Riot is considering wiping out the most stunning skins in LoL.
In games like League of Legends, champion skins are indispensable, often seen as a matter of survival. They constitute one of the game's primary revenue streams, particularly exclusive skins like those commemorating Worlds champions or those from LoL's early days that are now off-market.
Among these, the most remarkable and perhaps the most luxurious in LoL are the Prestige skins, featuring names that are deeply intertwined with the game's developmental history, such as Lux Elementalist or Udyr Spirit Guard... These skins are exceptional for their top-of-the-line design technology from Riot, which includes integrated VFX, animated skin splash arts, and skill icon design variations... Generally, nearly every LoL player aspires to own at least one skin from the Prestige line.
However, since the introduction of the Samira Ultimate Slayer skin, the Prestige skin line has deviated from its original essence for players. Numerous criticisms have been directed at Riot, alleging that the Samira Prestige skin did not receive adequate investment. Some have even pointed out that the Samira Prestige skin only offered a mere 3 contents upon release, significantly fewer than another Prestige skin like Miss Fortune (which had 6 contents plus Chromas).
But the community's complaints have irked Riot... A Riot representative shared that players have been excessively critical of the Samira Prestige skin: 'I don't think we should remain silent about the Samira Prestige skin. But if we haven't shared enough, I apologize. We believe that the Samira Prestige skin deserves recognition within this skin line and has been compared to previous Prestige skins in terms of popularity'.
'Not everyone agrees with the perception of Prestige skins, and that may be the reason for the negative feedback. This is certainly a collection of skins that are not regularly released, and their diverse offerings have caused significant performance issues in LoL. Therefore, we understand the confusion and dissatisfaction of the community. We will also consider whether to release Prestige skins in the future or not'.
According to a Riot representative, it can be understood that the community's negative feedback may push the Prestige skin line towards its end. It is highly likely that in the future, there will be no more Prestige skins released.
Riot's responses have only added to the community's frustration. Many believe that instead of improving the Prestige skin line to match its essence, Riot is showing signs of defense and shifting responsibility to the community for 'having too high expectations for Prestige skins'.
Whether this skin line will continue to appear in the future or not, it is perhaps the gamers who are most disadvantaged. Prestige skins are not easy to obtain, yet Riot is undermining the historical significance and value of this skin line that is so integral to the development of LoL.
