Saigon's Hidden Gem: Over 30 Years of Serving Mekong Delta Pancakes in an Alley
Located in a narrow alley on Dien Bien Phu Street, District 3, Saigon, this eatery owned by Ms. Chau Thi Tram is a go-to spot for pancake enthusiasts. “I learned to make pancakes from my mother when I was young and have loved it ever since,” shared the second-generation owner.
This address features an open kitchen placed right outside, allowing customers to directly observe the cooking process. The pancake station has about 10 large pans; it takes two people pouring pancakes simultaneously to meet the demand during peak hours.
The owner explains that Mekong Delta pancakes differ from other places as they incorporate coconut milk, creating a rich and distinctive flavor. The size is also larger. The rice flour is pre-mixed with a bit of turmeric, stirred evenly by hand for a smooth texture. The filling includes various options such as shrimp, squid, and meat, which are placed in hot oil before pouring a layer of pancake batter and coconut milk.
According to the owner, the cooking formula is carefully preserved, ensuring that familiar customers can always sense the authenticity. An added advantage is that the pancakes are poured directly, guaranteeing a consistently delightful, crispy, and fragrant experience. A good pancake, aside from its taste, must strike a balance between thickness and thinness.

Customers can choose from various fillings such as seafood, egg, shrimp, or mixed fillings. To avoid monotony, the owner also adds pandan leaves to the plate of fresh vegetables, creating a unique touch compared to other pancake spots. 'Thanks to the slightly sour taste of the leaves, I can eat up to 3 pancakes without feeling overwhelmed,' commented one diner.
Each pancake is priced between 30,000 - 50,000 VND, depending on the filling. In addition to pancakes, the establishment also serves 'banh khot,' a dish praised for its crispy crust and the aromatic scent of coconut milk.

The restaurant serves customers from around 3 PM to 10 PM. The predominantly outdoor seating provides an airy atmosphere for diners on high chairs and tables.
Minh Anh, residing in District 4, Saigon, shared her thoughts after her first visit: 'I observed the cooking process and found it to be hygienic. The food is delicious and suits my taste. Each person should eat about 2 pancakes to truly appreciate the deliciousness; eating more may lead to a sense of satiety,' said Anh.
