II. Sample Essay Narrating a Memory with a Close Friend
1. Narrating a Memory with a Close Friend - Sample Essay #1
In everyone's life, finding a friend is easy, but finding someone who truly understands you is challenging. I once felt immense happiness being with my dearest friend. However, I regret my actions that led to the end of that bond. Our friendship began on the journey to school, where this friend helped me, a stranger, understand many things. Despite her petite stature and long hair, she had to sell lottery tickets to make ends meet, while her age-mates enjoyed the cocoon of love. She taught me the value of money, and our friendship grew each day, sharing meals and joys. Suddenly, on a day we were supposed to meet, she broke our promise. Despite her sincere apology the next day, I refused to listen. Later, I heard that the girl selling lottery tickets had passed away due to a severe fever. She forgave me before her death, continuously asking for my forgiveness. I was wrong, and I wish I could turn back time to relive the days of laughter and shared sorrows. I miss you, my dear friend. Why are you lying there in silence, not responding? Why don't you sit up and play with me like before? Rain may not remember the sunshine, but I remember you vividly. Without you, life's complexities become overwhelming. Who will extend a helping hand during difficult times, as you once did? Why is there such a vast and lonely gap between us now? I really want to hear your words, the words of my most beloved friend. Now, I ask for your forgiveness...
I promise you, I will overcome every obstacle in life, living not just for myself but also for you. To me, you will always be my friend, and our friendship will endure even as the world undergoes countless changes.
3. A Memory with My Best Friend - Sample Essay 3
My childhood is forever linked to vast fields, flying storks, summer kite-flying, and the playful persuasions of Ròm, my childhood companion.
Ròm is my neighbor. We've been friends since breastfeeding. Despite having a proper name, everyone calls him Ròm, especially when he's shirtless, revealing his protruding ribcage. Despite being a boy and taller than me, I always manage to outsmart him! I wonder if he feels anything when I triumph, but his tousled head just nods, and he smiles before plotting his next move. Truly, what a silly guy! However, occasionally, he invites me to watch folk songs at the village's edge. For me, he is the best friend in the world.
Ròm and I used to play near the riverbank, a serene and peaceful place. However, it was only on that stretch of the river; the other side was considered off-limits. It was the house of Granny 5 from the lower neighborhood. She used to live there, but a few years ago, after her child drowned, she moved to live with relatives. So, the house was abandoned, and from then on, rumors of a haunted house started circulating. Initially known by a few, the tales spread until everyone in the neighborhood was buzzing about it. Whether the rumor-mongers actually saw a flying ghost or not, both Ròm and I felt a chill. Despite losing the field to Tí and Tèo, we had to be 'brave' and play by the river during the day. Yet, who would be afraid of us during daylight? However, I occasionally found myself curious about the supernatural, and I even convinced Ròm to explore it once, but he expertly declined, claiming he was scared. However, his avoidance didn't last forever. Tí, the troublemaker, openly challenged us to enter that abandoned house, and I, refusing to be belittled, agreed. Soon, I regretted my foolish heroism. I worried about Ròm, who, upon hearing my decision, started protesting loudly, diminishing my courage. But to protect my dignity, I had to go, so I begged, pleaded, and even threatened that devilish Tí. Luckily, he got scared and agreed. That night, we sneaked out, leaving our parents behind, and reached the riverbank where Tí and his gang were waiting. However, instead of entering, they hid behind bamboo bushes, watching us. I maintained composure, pulling Ròm into the dark, under the admiring eyes of the onlookers. Little did they know, I was sweating bullets. I'm terrified of the dark! Ròm, unaware of my fear, was horrified when I tightened my grip on his hand, letting out a loud yelp. Even in the middle of the house, nothing seemed to change – just darkness and the rustling of the wind. Though the fear lessened, I was still nervously excited. I wondered what kind of ghost this would be… thin or chubby? tall or short? would it fly or walk like a human? Oh, thinking about it gave me shivers... CRASH...
Dad, mom, grandma, Ròm...everyone surrounded me. Ròm explained that when the window suddenly slammed shut, he froze, planning to pull me out, only to realize I had disappeared. Panicked, he searched and found me lying stiff under the floor. Scared, he ran to find an adult. Tí and his gang, seeing Ròm flee, also panicked and scrambled away. That night, I received a severe scolding from my parents. Dad spanked me so hard that I felt numb all over. Grandma sat there chanting prayers, fearing I was possessed by spirits! Ròm wasn't any better, equally scolded and terrified. Truly a night to remember!
Later, Ròm moved to the city for school, leaving me alone in the district school, feeling incredibly sad. However, this memory will forever remain in a corner of my heart. I hope that one day, Ròm and I can fly kites, catch butterflies together again, and revisit that house, now transformed into a beautiful garden.

4. A Memory with My Best Friend - Sample Essay 4
Memories with a best friend are the ones never to be forgotten. Whether happy or sad, the sad ones often leave a deeper mark. Together, my close friend and I rode bikes in the pouring rain, both falling and getting sick, yet it remains a cherished memory.
My buddy, Nam, is a schoolmate and also a neighbor. We've been close friends since childhood, always sticking together. Our parents know that if one of us is missing, we can get information from the other. Once, on our way home from school, a sudden gust of wind heralded an incoming storm. Dark clouds gathered, but Nam and I, feeling the cool breeze, happily pedaled our bikes. Despite warnings to hurry before the rain, we ignored them.
The rain poured, a refreshing summer downpour. Raindrops on our faces felt delightful, and Nam and I decided to enjoy a bike ride while bathing in the rain. In a slippery section, Nam's bike hit a drain cover, making him fall. Seeing this, I slammed my brakes, toppling over as well. Both in pain, we abandoned the idea of rain play and carried our bikes home. That night, we both caught a cold with fever and cough. Despite parental scolding and a few days off from school, when we returned, we met with laughter, reminiscing about our rain adventure.
We promised not to be reckless again. If one of us had ill intentions, the other had to advise or intervene, never encouraging. Our friendship matured and grew stronger through such experiences.
5. A Memory with My Best Friend - Sample Essay 5
I have a dear friend named Giàu; we've been playmates since early childhood. Rich with shared memories, one that stands out is our game of cat and mouse by the pond.
Both of us, girls born in a rural area, easily identifiable by our dark skin and slender figures. Giàu, quiet and skilled in household chores, contrasts with my talkative and less competent self. Despite our differences, we blend harmoniously. Although friends, it often feels like having a mischievous younger sister, with Giàu assuming the role of a strict, responsible elder sister. In that particular instance, I invited her to play the cat and mouse game in the pond. Behind Giàu's house lay a large pond with deep water. Unaware of fear, I, who couldn't swim, confidently played the warrior mouse equipped with a makeshift float made from two dried coconut husks tied together. Giàu played the cat, chasing and attempting to catch me. Laughter echoed behind her house along with splashes of water:
Hey, kitty, come here!
Just wait there, little mouse.
While swimming in the river, the makeshift coconut husk float tying us together suddenly broke. I screamed for help as I sank. Giàu swam quickly, grabbed my shirt, and pulled me to the shore. Both exhausted from our playful antics, we sat panting, our faces pale with fear. Back home, none dared to tell our parents, but the next day, we met by the river to practice swimming. Determined to learn, I and Giàu made a pact - she promised to teach me until I became proficient.
Now that we're grown, reminiscing about childhood memories always brings joy. Fortunately, Giàu and I remain close friends, chatting despite no longer attending the same school. Grateful for a dear friend and the beautiful memories that motivate me for the future.
