Environmental pollution induces climate change, disrupts ecosystems, and impacts human health
A Letter to the Grown-Ups!
Signs of environmental pollution are evident everywhere: From climate change-induced erratic weather patterns, acid rains corroding valuable architectural structures, damaging ecosystems, to ozone layer depletion leading to increased UV radiation causing a surge in cancer villages and epidemics...
We are facing three common issues: Earth's warming, environmental pollution.
Through the following figures, individuals can partly understand the consequences of pollution:
1,000,000 seabirds, 100,000 marine animals die from entanglement or suffocation due to plastic waste.
30-50% of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion are absorbed by the ocean, temperature changes will affect the CO2 absorption capacity of phytoplankton and subsequently impact the ecosystem.
One of the main causes of pollution is the limited dissemination of environmental protection propaganda and education in society, leading to inadequate awareness and responsibility of organizations, individuals, and communities in participating in environmental conservation and protection.
Not to mention, the professional competence of environmental protection officials is limited; technical means serving inspection tasks have not met practical requirements. Therefore, in many cases, inspection teams cannot detect the sophisticated tricks of enterprises discharging pollutants into the environment.
The severity of environmental pollution poses a significant threat to the world's survival. Therefore, to address global environmental challenges, comprehensive solutions are needed.
It can be seen that air pollution is posing difficult challenges for all countries. Each country is striving in different ways to take action with solutions to improve air quality. Additionally, many countries are beginning to focus on investing in clean energy, although it has not yet significantly improved the current environmental situation.
I sincerely hope that each of us - adults, should come together to contribute to solving the issue of environmental pollution, aiming for a pollution-free green world.
Sincerely,
Nguyen Lan Khue
2. UPU 49th Edition Letter on Air Environment in Hanoi Best Sample No. 2:
Many major cities around the world, including Vietnam, are facing severe air pollution.
A Letter to the Grown-Ups!
It can be observed that in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, the rapid development of industrial factories without air filtration systems is causing serious air pollution. Therefore, air pollution is an alarming issue not only in Vietnam but also in all countries worldwide. Particularly, many cities worldwide are experiencing extremely severe pollution levels.
Humans are perhaps familiar with the information that the capital city of New Delhi in India is the most polluted city in the world, with the mortality rate due to air pollution ranking second only to heart disease.
The serious air pollution situation is mainly caused by vehicle emissions, with an estimated 8.5 million vehicles operating there.
Recently, the New Delhi Energy Resources Institute and the Impact Health Institute (US) jointly released a study showing that 3,000 people die in New Delhi each year due to air pollution.
Furthermore, in a recent announcement by Chinese officials, Beijing has been placed on red alert for air pollution, even being considered a major air pollution crisis.
Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the level of smog in China is more than 50 times higher than the organization's recommended safe level. A staggering number that will surely alarm many people about the level of pollution in China is 4,000 deaths per day due to pollution in China.
It is evident that air pollution severely impacts human health, with children being the most vulnerable group to health damage from the effects of air pollution.
If humans do not have environmental air protection awareness, its consequences may be as terrifying as the HIV-AIDS epidemic or many other epidemics.
Just about a week ago, the beautiful capital city of Hanoi in Vietnam witnessed its citizens constantly worried about the air quality, especially the alarming level of fine dust pollution. People became even more anxious when the air they breathe every day was likened to 'end-of-world atmosphere' in a report by Singapore's Channel News Asia.
From the current living conditions, transportation of the people to the research and analysis of experts all indicate a Hanoi 'lacking blue skies', a Hanoi of smoke and pollution rapidly increasing.
If living in Hanoi, you would probably have no difficulty in encountering the sight of people wearing masks and equipping themselves with full protective gear from head to toe to avoid dust pollution during the day. Stepping out without protective gear means returning home with dusty clothes, and one can feel the dust on their face and nose.
Many experts believe that 70% of air pollution in Hanoi is caused by transportation. This is reasonable as the current estimate shows that the capital city of Hanoi has 5.3 million motorcycles and 560,000 cars. This number is projected to increase by 11% annually for motorcycles and 17% for cars.
At this rate, by 2020, there will be nearly 1 million cars and 7 million motorcycles jostling on the streets of Hanoi. The sharp increase in the number of personal vehicles is attributed to the scarcity of public transportation, people's lack of walking habits, and a psychological desire to show status by owning a vehicle. Severe traffic congestion exacerbates environmental pollution to uncontrollable levels.
I hope that adults will join hands to contribute to solving the problem of environmental pollution towards a pollution-free green world.
Sincerely,
Hoang Mai Anh
3. UPU 49th Edition Letter on Environment, Sample No. 3: (The Importance of Environmental Protection)
Hanoi is currently one of the environmental pollution 'hotspots' in the country.
To Mr. James Joseph Kendall:
As a student who only knows how to eat, study, and use Facebook like me, there is hardly any time to participate in social activities. However, through Facebook, I am still aware of and particularly interested in your activities and those of the Keep Hanoi Clean organization.
Those are indeed fantastic efforts for Hanoi's environment. Remarkable and unimaginable, like the images that people begin to know about you, a 'foreigner picking up trash' diligently in the pitch-black drainage ditch, but gradually, the activities of Keep Hanoi Clean expand and attract more participants.
As I understand it, Mr. Kendall initially came to Vietnam for tourism, but after a short time, he developed a special love for the land and people here, hence deciding to establish a long-term connection with this land.
And I also learned that upon arriving in Vietnam, he had teaching jobs at an English center and in a public school in Hanoi. But after organizing cleanup sessions with friends for a while, he decided to leave his 'comfort zone' to establish the Keep Hanoi Clean organization in May 2016.
According to the statistics I've learned, Hanoi generates approximately 6,500 tons of solid household waste alone per day, so ensuring a clean environment requires a strategy and action from the authorities. However, the activities of Keep Hanoi Clean have helped many people live greener and become more environmentally conscious.
Clearly, if choosing a prominent environmental movement in Hanoi in recent years, Keep Hanoi Clean is the first name that comes to mind. I sincerely hope that this organization for the environment will continue to grow stronger and this model can be replicated.
As a young person born and raised in Hanoi, I sincerely want to express my gratitude and hope to have the opportunity to participate in future campaigns of Keep Hanoi Clean.
