Samsung has announced the addition of the new 'HDR+' feature for its 2016 SUHD TVs. This innovative feature allows SUHD TVs to upgrade all SDR content to HDR, thereby enhancing the quality of original HDR content during playback.

The HDR+ feature allows TVs to utilize algorithms to analyze real-time input signals, thereby extrapolating methods to improve contrast, color, and image detail for the final display. Essentially, it operates similarly to the 'upscaling to 4K' feature commonly found in current 4K TVs. However, image quality remains heavily reliant on the TV's processing capabilities, with higher-end TVs providing superior interpolation. While the quality is enhanced compared to the original content, it may not match true HDR content.

HDR+ also enhances standard HDR content. Notably, it brightens details in dark areas for improved visibility and increases contrast in bright scenes to differentiate objects from the background while retaining more details on the screen, resulting in overall better image quality. It's essential to note that these enhancements are Samsung's proprietary improvements and may not adhere to industry filmmaking standards.

In addition, when you activate the HDR+ feature, you can customize the HDR effects according to your preferences through the 'Special Viewing Mode.' The HDR feature will be added via online firmware update for the TV. If you own a 2016 SUHD TV, you can check now to see if it's available. However, for those with a 2016 UHD TV, Samsung announces that the update will be available only in September.
