Last Thursday, Samsung announced that their fourth-quarter 2022 business profits are expected to reach only about $3.4 billion (4.3 trillion Won), a 69% decrease compared to the same period in 2021. At the same time, during the last three months of 2021, Samsung revealed record profits for the conglomerate. The most recent instance Samsung reported record-low business profits was in the third quarter of 2014, at 4 trillion Won.

Samsung's statement reads: “In the memory chip sector, market demand is even lower than expected, as partners and customers adjust their held inventory to ensure optimal business costs. This stems from market concerns, the consequence of gloomy global economic prospects, and rising interest rates worldwide.”

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Samsung's memory chip division achieved substantial revenue due to the demand for system upgrades and data centers, serving the need for online work during times when everyone had to stay at home due to various social distancing measures. However, in the last quarter, NAND and DRAM chip prices dropped significantly, coinciding with inflation, rising interest rates, and political concerns affecting market demand.

It's quite certain that Samsung Corporation's overall revenue will not only be affected by the memory chip segment, as the demand for devices ranging from laptops to smartphones and electronics, in general, has declined. People are focusing on hoarding cash and cutting expenses to cope with the unfavorable economic situation in the present and future.

In August 2022, IC Insights reduced its semiconductor industry revenue forecast for the previous year from 11% to 7%, with the direct cause being the decline in memory chip prices, both NAND and DRAM, in the last three months of the past year. At the end of this month, Samsung's Q4 2022 business report will be released, but it's unlikely to provide detailed breakdowns for specific sectors like TV, smartphones, memory, and semiconductor chips.
