1. Samsung unveils groundbreaking camera sensor for smartphones with world's highest resolution
Samsung has just announced a new camera sensor for smartphones, boasting the highest resolution in the current market. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 is the first 64MP camera sensor on a smartphone, with pixel size of 0.8 micrometers, similar to existing 48MP sensors. This implies that this camera sensor will have a larger physical size.
ISOCELL Bright GW1 will be capable of merging 4 pixels into one larger pixel to enhance image quality in low-light conditions. The image quality after pixel merging will be equivalent to a 16MP sensor, similar to current 48MP sensors yielding images equivalent to 12MP.
Samsung's new camera sensor is also capable of capturing photos at full 64MP resolution in good lighting conditions. Samsung's previous 48MP sensor lacked this feature, while Sony's 48MP sensor is supported.
Smartphones with 48MP cameras are becoming increasingly popular, with models from Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Sony, and Samsung. Hence, Samsung expects its newly launched sensor to provide a significant competitive advantage, especially towards the end of 2019.
We can expect the upcoming Galaxy Note 10, set to release in the second half of this year, to feature a major camera improvement with Samsung's new 64MP sensor.
Furthermore, the race to develop camera sensors for smartphones indicates Samsung's desire to compete with Sony, aiming to dominate another component segment alongside memory chips and OLED displays.
