At present, the blue fluorescent solution used by Samsung Display for AMOLED panel has an internal luminous efficiency of 25%, while the company's red and green PHOLEDs boast a luminous efficiency of 100%. By substituting blue fluorescent OLED with PHOLED, Samsung Display could decrease overall power consumption for the display panel.
Samsung could employ PHOLED blue panels on Galaxy Z Fold7/Z Flip7As per the report, the new PHOLED blue material is expected to achieve a minimum luminous efficiency of 55% and exceed 65% compared to previously utilized materials.
Market research firm UBI Research reports that this new material is slated for release in the latter half of 2025. Sources from Sammobiles indicate that the initial Galaxies to incorporate them will be the Galaxy Z Fold7/Z Flip7. However, this information remains unconfirmed, and concerns about durability could impact its utilization in Samsung's flagship devices. The lifespan of the developing blue PHOLED materials is only 55% of that of blue fluorescent materials.
Overall, while transitioning to blue PHOLEDs has the potential to significantly reduce power consumption, the longevity of these materials remains a concern. Despite these challenges, Samsung's progress in blue PHOLED technology is seen as a major achievement in the OLED industry.
