Samsung showcases 17-inch sliding PC display

During the first day of the Innovation 2022 event introducing Intel Core Gen 13 processors for desktops yesterday, CEO of Samsung Display JS Choi also appeared on stage to unveil the world's first prototype of a 17-inch sliding display for PCs.

The sliding display allows you to transform a 13-inch screen into a larger 17-inch one by pulling it out to reveal a hidden part of the screen. This concept was previously seen on an unreleased LG smartphone called the LG Rollable before the company shut down its mobile division.

Currently, everything remains at the conceptual stage, and we may witness the implementation of this technology in the future. However, there are also some challenges with this type of screen for laptops. This technology may work well with tablets because they can connect to a keyboard magnetically, without interfering with the sliding mechanism. Laptops, on the other hand, are different because they are always fixedly attached to the keyboard.

CEO JS Choi even declared that “foldable screens have disappeared when sliding screens appeared”. Of course, it remains to be seen when and whether companies will release products applying this technology. If they do, there is a high likelihood that they will debut at the CES event next year. Let's wait and see.
