The U22 men's and women's football event at the 29th SEA Games will feature a total of 11 national teams from 11 Southeast Asian countries, hosted by Malaysia. In this edition, the national football team of Vietnam will participate in both the men's and women's football categories. The Vietnam U22 men's team, led by Coach Nguyen Huu Thang, is in Group B along with teams from Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, East Timor, and the Philippines. Group A consists of hosts Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Laos, and Brunei. Vietnam U22 men's team will face opponents in the same group from August 14 to August 29 to determine the winner of the SEA Games 29 Gold Medal.

Unlike the men's football, women's football at this SEA Games will only have 5 participating teams. Therefore, the 5 teams including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, and the Philippines will compete in a round-robin format, and the team with the highest points will win the top spot and the gold medal.
