From the Bà Trưng sisters to Lady Triệu in the national sovereignty protection struggles, countless heroic examples exist of women courageously fighting and sacrificing for a glorious Vietnam. In today's era of science and technology, Vietnamese women assert themselves, demonstrating dynamism and creativity in their work, honored in society while never forgetting their roles, positions, and duties in family life.
October 20th is annually designated as Vietnamese Women's Day, recognizing individuals endowed with the eight golden letters: Heroes, Indomitable, Virtuous, Resourceful.
Today, amidst the jubilant atmosphere of women, let's revisit the significance and history of October 20th - the establishment day of the Vietnam Women's Union.
Respected comrades! The history of the Vietnamese nation is one of struggle for nation-building and defense, wherein Vietnamese women play a vital role. Vietnamese women are born in a country with an agricultural civilization, based on rice cultivation and handicrafts, making them the main workforce. Moreover, our country has always been invaded by enemies, with a poor standard of living. From these realities, Vietnamese women exhibit a distinctive style: they are resilient fighters against foreign invasion; diligent, creative, and intelligent workers; guardians of the nation's culture and identity; gentle, virtuous, and resourceful mothers who have given birth to heroic generations of the nation.
Under the feudal and imperial regimes, women were the most oppressed, exploited, and unfairly treated group, always demanding liberation and ready to follow the revolution. From the early days of resisting the French, women actively participated in movements such as Can Vuong, Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc, Dong Du, and many famous women joined precursor organizations of the Communist Party of Vietnam such as Hoang Thi Ai, Thai Thi Boi, Ton Thi Que, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai...
Since 1927, mass organizations began to form and attract a large number of women from all walks of life, such as the Red Youth League, Red Farmer League, mutual aid groups, vocational training groups, and women's organizations like:
- In 1927, a group of sisters Nguyen Thi Luu, Nguyen Thi Minh Lang, Nguyen Thi Thuy from Phat Tich village (Bac Ninh) joined the Revolutionary Youth Union, advocating, establishing vocational training groups, and promoting literacy.
- The group led by Thai Thi Boi, including sisters Le Trung Luong, Nguyen Thi Hong, Huynh Thuyen, participated in activities at Dong Khanh Women's School.
- In 1928, the group of sisters Nguyen Thi Minh Khai along with Nguyen Thi Phuc and Nguyen Thi An participated in the activities of the Red Association of Tan Viet. This group, in connection with sisters Xan, Thiu, Nhuận, Liên, established the Women's Liberation newspaper in Vinh.
- In 1930, within the Soviet movement in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces, 12,946 women joined the women's liberation movement, together with the people, struggled to establish Soviet government in over 300 communes. On May 1, 1930, Comrade Nguyen Thi Thap led the struggle of over 4,000 peasants in two districts, Chau Thanh and My Tho, including thousands of women.
- On February 3, 1930, the Indochinese Communist Party was established. The first principle of the Party stated: 'Equal rights for men and women.' The Party early recognized that women are an important force of the revolution and set the task: The Party must liberate women, connecting the liberation of the nation and the liberation of classes with the liberation of women. The Party stated: Women must participate in revolutionary organizations (workers' unions, peasants' unions) and establish separate organizations for women to attract women from all social classes to participate in the revolution.
This is why on October 20, 1930, the Women's Union was officially established. This historic event deeply reflects the Party's viewpoint on the role of women in the revolution, on women's organizations, and on the cause of women's liberation.
Since then, Vietnam officially celebrates October 20th as 'Vietnamese Women's Day'!
Every year, October 20th is chosen as Vietnamese Women's Day, which is the nation's recognition of individuals bestowed with 8 golden words by Uncle Ho: 'Industrious, Indomitable, Virtuous, Reliable'.
87 years ago (October 20, 1930), the Vietnamese Women's Anti-Imperialist Association was established. It served as the precursor organization to the Vietnam Women's Union.
Since its inception, the Vietnam Women's Union has rallied women from all walks of life, striving for national liberation, class liberation, and women's liberation in line with the Party's direction.
The Party emphasizes: 'If national liberation and class liberation are achieved without the liberation of women, then the revolution is only half-complete.'
President Ho Chi Minh once said: 'The splendor of Vietnam's prestige is attributed to Vietnamese women, who, young and old, embroider the nation with beauty and brilliance.'
Women have been an indispensable part contributing to the success of the Vietnamese revolution, in both the resistance wars against France and the United States. In the nation-building process, women have made significant contributions to drive social development.
