A solo journey to Côn Đảo unexpectedly turned into a memorable experience, encountering new friends who share the passion for exploring the beauty of a heroic land, rich in history, and immersed in tranquility.
Embarking on a quest for serenity while traveling Côn Đảo
Initially anticipating solitude on my solo trip to Côn Đảo, I found companionship aboard the ferry from Ho Chi Minh City. One traveler intended to pay respects at the memorial of Võ Thị Sáu, the shrine of Bà Phi Yến, while another sought to rediscover the island's essence during various moments. Upon arrival, I also befriended a younger child, and from then on, we formed a group to explore together.
At 7 am on Saturday, the leisurely ferry approached the dock after a 12-hour journey. Fatigue was palpable among passengers—some battled seasickness, others struggled to sleep amidst the engine's drone, and a few dozed fitfully, unaccustomed to island travel. Nevertheless, upon docking, relief washed over us like a tide, greeted warmly by the islanders' gestures of hospitality—the boatman's friendly wave, the fisherwoman's smile, and the townsfolk's eager reception...
Passengers quickly dispersed, boarding vehicles to the town for rest and breakfast, preparing for a day of exploring historical landmarks. With adept familiarity with the roads, alleys, and landmarks, one companion became the de facto guide, leading us to the Côn Đảo Prison, Tiger Cages, Island Lord’s Palace, 914 Pier, Côn Đảo Museum, and Lime Kiln.

Exploring the island's beaches, from renowned shores to hidden gems, we found them all pristine and untouched, retaining their natural charm.
Starting from Côn Sơn town, heading northeast along the Côn Đảo airport road reveals countless beautiful beaches, majestic headlands, rugged cliffs, and deep azure waters. The sea varies in shades of blue, blending seamlessly with the deep blue sky.
The island's roads lead travelers from one surprise to another, with winding curves, steep inclines, and sudden descents where a simple release of the brake sends the vehicle whizzing along. Cars can hug the mountainside, skirt the coastline, and at certain points, come to a halt to admire neighboring islets.
The weather on Côn Đảo this season is as unpredictable as a teenager's mood swings. Crossing a small mountain pass, one moment we're pelted by raindrops, the next we're bathed in radiant sunshine, occasionally getting a sunburn.
Discovering the seascape of Côn Đảo

While Lò Vôi beach boasts lush forests and hammocks for eternal naps, Đầm Trầu offers a pristine turquoise expanse resembling a crescent moon; the 2 km-long Dong beach, deserted and serene, leads to perfect spots like Chim Cape and Tàu Bể Cape for sunrise viewing. Swimming in the sea and immersing oneself in the deep blue ocean is not enough; one must reserve sunrise moments to fully appreciate the romantic beauty of Côn Đảo's seascape.
From Tàu Bể Cape, travelers can witness the sun gradually rising behind Seven-sided Rock, casting pink hues across the sky of Hòn Cau, creating shimmering clouds reflecting in the vast azure sea, forming giant natural mirrors, mesmerizing in their beauty.
Perhaps drawn to tranquility, we constantly seek secluded, untouched beaches for exploration. Any trail leading downwards prompts us to park and wander immediately.
In Côn Đảo, during low tide in the afternoon, the water recedes far, revealing expansive beaches where one can frolic until exhaustion. Gentle waves lullaby the shore, creating melodies full of emotion. The late afternoon sun still shines fiercely, shimmering on the water's surface, creating a picturesque scene of rhythmic waves and dazzling reflections.
For ocean lovers, the sight of the sea always brings a sense of longing, like a child yearning for their mother. Upon seeing long, pristine beaches, the urge to run, jump, build sandcastles, and leave messages on the sand arises—a message to the ocean: 'I have arrived.'

Our itinerary is always filled with the sound of ocean waves. From the town, heading south towards Bến Đầm via Shark Cape, we encounter the beautiful Nhát beach.
This spot is perfect for admiring sunsets and attracts couples for moss-covered photoshoots, 'checking in' at Love Peak to reaffirm their steadfast affection. In the evening, as the sunset hides behind the mountains, the sky transitions from blue to deep purple, reflecting onto the shimmering sea, forming beautiful lines and shapes.
During our three days in Côn Đảo, we wandered through every nook and cranny, exploring each beach to frolic freely, playfully engaging with the sea, and gracefully dancing on the warm water. It's safe to say that I and my newfound friends have truly immersed ourselves in the most peaceful and tranquil place in Vietnam.
With each place we visited, the waves seemed to beckon us back, the sea breeze reluctant to let us leave, and somewhere on the beach, our bare footprints still linger.
