Step 2:

Select a friend from your list whom you want to change the nickname and color. Then on Messenger Android, tap the 'i' icon at the top right corner; on iOS, tap on your friend's name.

Step 3:

To change the background color of the message displayed during chat, select 'Color' and choose your favorite color.
