Having a physical keyboard for a smartphone or a tablet seems to be a rare feature for these devices. The power of a physical keyboard for these devices cannot be denied, but it adds bulkiness to the sleek and lightweight gadgets of today. To overcome this situation, various brands have introduced detachable physical keyboards to the market.
For Android devices, you can easily use Bluetooth keyboards that you are familiar with from your PC.
Setup Process
Step 1: First, you need a Bluetooth keyboard and a device running Android.
Note: It's recommended to use Android devices from version 4.1 Jelly Bean and above
Navigate to the Settings, select Bluetooth, and turn it on. Next, go to the Bluetooth section to proceed with the setup.
Step 2: At this point, your Android device will automatically search for available Bluetooth devices. If your keyboard is not found, turn it back on and tap the Search for devices button. To successfully connect, ensure that your keyboard is not connected to any other device.
Step 3: Once Android detects your keyboard, tap on the keyboard in the Available devices section. You will see a random series of numbers; enter this number on your Bluetooth keyboard.
Step 4: After a successful connection, test the keyboard by pressing the Windows+ESC key combination. You should be taken to the Android home screen.
Step 5: Android limits the use of a specific number of key combinations as it primarily relies on touch interactions. Even with an external keyboard, you still need to touch the screen to unlock, use widgets, etc. The advantage, however, is the ability to type text or wake the screen using the keyboard instead of the device's power button.
Shortcut Keys:
There are some basic shortcut keys:
- ESC = Go back
- CTRL + ESC = Menu
- CTRL + ALT + DEL = Restart
- ALT + SPACE = Search
- ALT + TAB = Multitasking view
- CMD + A = Calculator
- CMD + C = Contacts
- CMD + E = Email
- CMD + G = Gmail
- CMD + L = Calendar
- CMD + P = Play Music
- CMD + Y = YouTube
Step 6: You can also use arrow keys to navigate through the menu and select apps. When highlighted, apps will be bordered by a green rectangular outline. To open, press the Enter key.
Now you've set up the configuration to connect physical keyboards or use those designed for PCs with your Android device. You can quickly compose texts with a keyboard connected to your tablet via Bluetooth. Wishing you success.
