Xu Xê Cakes – The Indispensable Gift at Engagement Ceremonies
Bride and groom cakes (also known as su sê or xu xê cakes) are a traditional Vietnamese sweet treat. Đình Bảng is closely associated with the origin of this cake during the Lý dynasty. According to legend, the name of the cake was given by King Lý Anh Tông. The story goes that when King Lý Anh Tông went to battle, his dedicated wife laboriously made and sent these cakes to him. Impressed by the delicious taste and thinking of the love between husband and wife, the king named the cake 'bride and groom cake' (later also known as xu xuê cake).

Following tradition, the cake is wrapped with two types of leaves. Inside, there is a layer of banana leaves for non-stick, and the outermost layer is coconut leaves. Although, at engagement parties, the cake may be placed in red paper boxes.
The best way to cook the cake is by steaming it over a wood-burning stove with medium heat. In many places in Vietnam, the cake is used as a ceremonial item placed in engagement trays. It is also served as a dessert during weddings.
