Users can reduce the WinSxS folder size using the Disk Clean tool provided by Windows. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog, type cleanmgr, then press Enter or OK.
Step 2: Once the Disk Cleanup interface opens, select the system drive partition and click OK.
Step 3: Wait briefly as the system scans for unused files.
Step 4: Next, in the Disk Cleanup tool window for the system drive, click on the Clean up system files button.
Step 5: Now, the Disk Cleanup tool will rescan the system and display information about WinSxS, labeled as Windows Update Cleanup. Check the box next to Windows Update Cleanup and click OK.
Step 6: A small dialog box will appear, requesting confirmation to delete files. Click Delete Files to confirm.
Immediately, the system will initiate the process of reducing WinSxS by thoroughly deleting internal data. Note that once completed, you cannot uninstall any previous updates.
Upon successful completion, you may observe a considerable amount of system drive space being freed up, all depending on the space occupied by the WinSxS folder. This cleanup method resembles deleting the Windows.old directory, as we previously discussed. Readers can revisit our guide on deleting Windows.old for reference if needed.
