Microsoft is releasing a new update for its Skype applications, just under a month after the last update was released. The previous Skype 8.61 update replaced the React Native version of Skype available on the Microsoft Store with an Electron-based version, similar to the desktop version found on the Skype website.

Skype 8.62 update brings several new features, mainly focusing on video calls, inspired by Microsoft's Teams service. After adding the ability to replace your background during video calls, Skype now offers a range of pre-installed images for you to choose as your default background, instead of requiring you to upload your own - although you can still do so if you prefer. Check out How to Make Video Calls on Skype here.
There are also improvements in the split-screen view during video calls. On mobile devices, you can now see up to 9 participants at once, and on desktop, this number increases from 9 to 12 people. Perhaps more importantly, Microsoft has improved message synchronization for some chats.
Besides these features, there isn't much novelty here, and with Microsoft preparing to launch a Teams version targeting regular users, it seems like Skype will receive less attention over time. If you don't have a Skype account yet, create one now to chat with loved ones from anywhere.
If you're a regular user of chat and video calls on the Facebook Messenger app, you'll undoubtedly notice many interface changes. What's more, Facebook introduces screen sharing feature to Messenger app for iOS and Android in this update.
