Skype is trialing the end-to-end encryption feature for chat conversations using the Signal Protocol from Open Whisper Systems. However, there is currently no information regarding the release of this feature on Skype for all users.
It's important to note that the content of conversations is not displayed in the conversation list or any other notifications to keep all shared information confidential.
Skype is experimenting with the end-to-end encryption feature for chat conversations.
The end-to-end encryption feature will be provided for text messages, voice calls, as well as some types of files. Currently, these conversations are limited to 2 people. However, Microsoft aims to enhance user experience by allowing multiple users to join conversations in the future.
Microsoft provides detailed information on accessing and using this feature for Skype users:
“Users can try this feature by selecting New Private Conversation from the compose menu or from the recipient's profile. Once the recipient accepts your invitation, all calls and messages in the conversation will be end-to-end encrypted until the conversation ends. You can only participate in private conversations on a single device at a time. Additionally, you can switch conversations to any other device, but the messages you send and receive will be displayed on the device you are using at that time.”
Skype is available on both Android and iOS operating systems. You can download:
- Download Skype for Android
- Download Skype for iPhone
The Private Conversation feature is currently available to Skype Insiders using Skype version 8.13.76.8 for iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop. This feature is currently not supported on the UWP version, although Microsoft has stated that UWP client support will be implemented in the near future. While Skype is testing out new features, the Opera browser developer has also released a new experimental version with some important additions. The Opera 51 Beta release supports AppleScript and many other features to provide a better experience for users, but these features are still in the testing phase
