According to Engadget and the renowned hacker Jane Manchun Wong, Snapchat experiments with the Snapchat Status feature. It incorporates location check-ins similar to Foursquare (more precisely Swarm) on Snap Map, displaying users' locations and intentions through Bitmoji characters in Snapchat. For example, users can announce their plans to hang out with family, travel far, or visit nearby places.
The new check-in feature operates only among users who have shared their locations with each other, and only new users can view their log of visited places. Additionally, users can switch to 'ghost mode' temporarily to keep their location or status private. They can also see who has viewed their location or status.
In response to TechCrunch, Snap stated that the company is currently testing the feature, but it's only available to '1%' of users in Australia. There's no assurance that the feature will be rolled out to all users worldwide.
Beyond convincing users to return to the app, the new Status feature is sure to be an exclusive offering on Snapchat. Facebook would find it challenging to easily replicate this check-in feature on their platform.
