The war may have ended many years ago, but its enduring consequences remain an incessant pain for the nation and people of Vietnam. Countless heroes fell, sacrificing blood and flesh for the independence of the nation. They died so that the country could be born. Then there were numerous elderly mothers, weary-eyed, waiting for their sons. Many wives, night after night, anxiously awaited news of their husbands. Ultimately, what they received was a lifeless death notice and a husband or father with debilitating effects of the toxic Agent Orange spread across their ravaged bodies. Among these enduring consequences, the most painful is the prolonged impact of the massive amounts of Agent Orange that the United States sprayed over South Vietnam during more than 10 years of war.

Agent Orange is a deadly concoction of highly toxic herbicides, designed to defoliate a large number of trees. The U.S. employed it as a biological weapon to clear our military-concealed areas. The primary component of Agent Orange is dioxin, a colorless liquid, abbreviated as 2,3,7,8-TCDD. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. mixed this chemical with other substances in napalm and used airplanes to aerially spray it over the forests of Vietnam. The name 'Agent Orange' comes from the orange stripes on the barrels, distinguishing it from other herbicides like blue and white ones. This type of toxic substance has a strong dispersal capability in air and water, penetrating deep into the soil, making it difficult to degrade. According to statistics, the U.S. released 76.9 million liters of Agent Orange into our waters, equivalent to about 370 kg of dioxin.

In the past, the consequences of this toxic substance were extremely severe. An estimated 400,000 people, including both Vietnamese soldiers and civilians, were poisoned and died shortly afterward. Over 500,000 children were born with deformities. Besides causing death and fetal malformations, it brought horrendous diseases to those directly exposed, such as cancer, followed by diabetes, infertility, skin diseases, immune disorders, abnormalities in the body's structure, affecting the nervous system, vision, and more. This toxic substance not only directly affected the people of Vietnam but also heavily exposed the U.S. military and hired soldiers on the southern battlefield. However, the exposure was not as severe as for our people due to shorter contact time and different living conditions, as the military had access to proper meals. Thus, the residual toxins deeply infiltrated our bodies, leaving incredibly painful consequences. The use of this toxic substance, which decimated countless trees, led to severe pollution of the environment, including air, water sources, and soil, disrupting the ecological balance and wiping out many plant and animal species, turning the land into a 'dead' zone for decades, as no plant could survive due to the excessive remaining dioxin. Even today, the pain of Agent Orange has not ceased. The dioxin toxin hides in the bodies of our forefathers, distorting genes and passing on genetic abnormalities to descendants. This results in seemingly normal couples giving birth to deformed children. Additionally, one of the main causes is the lingering dioxin residue in the soil, exposing people living on it without them noticing. Pre-screening before childbirth is not yet widely practiced. As a result, children born with terrible deformities such as missing limbs, heads, undeveloped brains, no spine, deformed eyes and noses, lack of cognition, paralysis, etc., bring immense suffering to the couples who helplessly strive for treatment. These couples bear the economic burden, struggling with both the relentless pain and poverty. Some, unwillingly, have to abandon raising their disabled children, leaving a heavy burden on society.

Though the war has passed, the agony of Agent Orange lingers—a crime that cannot be compensated or appeased by a few apologies. The U.S. empire, for its heinous and ruthless goal of subjugating Vietnam, viewed our homeland as a testing ground for toxic substances, alongside a brutal method to annihilate our army. The unjust and inhumane war left our people, and even U.S. veterans, with tremendous physical and mental pain. However, in the lawsuit seeking justice for our people, the U.S. government found every reason to oppose it, causing outrage among our people. Faced with the severe consequences of Agent Orange, some remain indifferent, apathetic, and callous to those painful images, while enjoying the independence and peace built upon the blood and tears of the victims of Agent Orange.

Despite knowing that nothing can compensate or alleviate the pain of Agent Orange, each of us needs the right attitude, wholeheartedly joining hands to support the victims in overcoming that pain. Regularly organize volunteer programs for Agent Orange victims, raise funds to support the lives of victims, visit and support centers that nurture victims of Agent Orange, assist struggling families, and provide comfort and encouragement to their loved ones. This reflects the precious traditions of 'Drink water, remember the source' and 'Mutual affection,' along with the humanitarian spirit and warm, beautiful sentiments of the Vietnamese people throughout our thousands of years of history.
