The ballooning storage usage of the Facebook app occurs because every time you browse through posts and wander around the platform, Facebook sends data to its own integrated browser, similar to Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. While this isn't a problem for regular browsing, Facebook on iPhone and iPad consumes excessive device data, namely the Cache it accumulates during usage. As you access more links over time, Facebook's storage usage increases.
In a recent interview addressing the resource consumption issue on smartphones, Facebook emphasized their ongoing efforts to optimize the caching process for user access paths, ensuring smooth performance without bloating storage. Their statement reads:
'Photos and videos constitute the majority of data stored in our cache, and we've recently updated the app to automatically delete old, unused photos. We've also rolled out version 18 to clear temporarily saved web pages if they exceed 25MB in size.'
However, the 25MB threshold remains suboptimal, particularly for older iPhone models like the iPhone 4S or 5C with limited 8GB storage. Additionally, Apple's restriction on user cache clearance exacerbates the issue, leaving users at the mercy of bloating apps like Facebook.
Resolving the Persistent Issue on iPhone: Uninstalling and Reinstalling Facebook
Another approach is to completely abandon the Facebook app and switch to accessing it through regular web browsers like Safari or Chrome. This allows for easier cache clearance. Similar issues are observed with other apps such as Zalo and Viber.
In addition, users can monitor memory usage and check iPhone storage to gain better insights into data usage on their devices. This can be achieved by installing various apps, backing up data, and exploring different methods of checking iPhone storage.
