This is the outcome of a hacker group named Clop, specializing in creating ransomware. Sony indicates they have reached out to the affected individuals to guide them in mitigating the consequences. In a message to those impacted, Sony assures that they have not observed any misuse or public disclosure of their information by the hackers.
According to the investigation, this hack was executed by exploiting a vulnerability between Sony's system and the MOVEit file storage platform they were utilizing. Hackers leveraged this file transfer flaw to infiltrate the system as an unauthorized user and stealthily copy data files. The administrators of MOVEit identified and marked this vulnerability on May 31, just three days after the hack occurred, and Sony also detected the incident on June 2, immediately temporarily disconnecting the two systems to await a fix.
This incident is unrelated to another claim by a ransomware hacker group stating that
they have hacked all of Sony's systemsa few days ago. Currently, Sony has not provided any further response to this new incident beyond a general announcement that they will conduct an investigation.
