According to Yonhap, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea recently announced that the country will begin issuing electronic visas (e-visas) for Southeast Asian tourists from early May.
Previously, South Korea planned to issue electronic visas for Southeast Asian tourists visiting the country starting from the second half of 2017.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea, the country will waive visa requirements for 5 days for tourist groups from Southeast Asian countries traveling to Jeju Island, transiting at Incheon and Gimhae airports of South Korea, thereby providing them with the opportunity to visit the capital Seoul or other cities of South Korea. This move comes as the South Korean tourism industry faces the risk of losing half of its Chinese tourists, due to China's opposition to South Korea's deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system.
Currently, South Korean authorities are making efforts to encourage airlines of this country to open routes to Southeast Asia and Japan.
