UMG and TikTok have reached an agreement aimed at enhancing their existing relationship and providing benefits for musicians. TikTok users will now have access to UMG artists' works and the entire catalog of the world's second-largest music company.
It's a mutually beneficial step. For TikTok users, they will have a larger song library to add to their videos, and for UMG, artists and composers will not only be compensated but also have the opportunity for widespread exposure on the social media platform. It's not uncommon for a song to become popular on TikTok, like Old Town Road by Lil Nas X or Savage by Megan Thee Stallion.
Recently, Universal Music Group took a bold move by removing its entire music library from the Triller video app, a TikTok competitor. They accused Triller of withholding payments from the music giant. Triller's management has vehemently denied these allegations.
TikTok has executed similar deals with other companies such as Sony Music, Warner Music Group, and Merlin, an independent label network. The platform also added Prince's entire catalog last year. All these developments provide TikTok users with an extensive music library to use, while avoiding licensing disputes.
