A childhood lacking both material and emotional abundance
At the time of his birth, Maguire's parents were quite young. When Wendy Brown was 18, his mother was working in advertising and striving to become an actress, while his 20-year-old father, Vincent Maguire, worked as a chef and construction worker. However, they divorced when the actor was just 2 years old.
The divorce of his parents when he was still very young also had an impact, making his life even more difficult. Maguire recalls: 'In my head, I always wished for a decent place to live, but the reality was that I had to sleep on my relatives' couch, some nights we had to wander outside to find a place to sleep. My family had nothing but food stamps and government healthcare. I wanted to escape from this situation, and my biggest ambition at that time was to earn a lot of money.'
Afterward, Maguire thought that following his father to become a chef was the quickest way to make money. However, it was his mother who persuaded him to attend acting classes, and she gave him $100 to do so.
Entrepreneurship at the age of 12
At 12 years old, Tobey began appearing in commercials and TV series. For him, success wasn't about waiting for doors to open, the actor shared: 'It's not just about the opportunities that come to you, it's also about attitude. It's about the ability to imagine a different future for yourself.'
From there, the actor's career solidified as he participated in films like This Boy’s Life in 1993 alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1997, he starred in The Ice Storm.
In 2000, he played the lead role in Wonder Boys, alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Douglas. But the biggest turning point in his acting career was in 2002, when he portrayed Peter Packer - Spider-Man, a role that earned him $4 million. In 2003, he voiced for Seabiscuit and received $12 million.
'When I first found success, I always had to be cautious with the money I made, this surely stemmed from my past experiences. Do you know those lottery winners who get a large sum of money? They spend it all right away, but that would never happen to me. I don't want to be in a position where my expenses are too high, forcing me to earn money from one movie to another,' Tobey said.
Tobey became the highest-paid actor when he took on the role of web-slinging superhero with $17 million, plus 5% of the box office revenue for Spider-Man 2. And $15 million plus 7.5% of the box office revenue for Spider-Man part 3.
36-Year Friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio
